Default Wireless Laptop Security or a High Speed Modem

Hey guys, a quick question here. I just purchased a new Laptop for myself. It came with a wireless card installed. Immediatly on getting my computer and turning it off the first night, I noticed 2 other people had hacked into my connection. I was thinking about networking the other puters in my house and going wireless all the way. My question is this.
What do you in the know consider to be better, a wireless router or a high speed modem. If you like the wireless router, does anyone know what the best choice is as far a being able to secure it? I want to lock this sucker down as tight as I can get it.

Here are 4 things that I would do for sure:

Change the default SSID (network name).
    Disable the SSID broadcast option.
Change the default password needed to access a wireless device.
    Enable MAC address filtering.

With my Laptop, when closing down Windows , a small dialog box opens automatically and tells me others are logged into my computer, it also says any info or files they may have open will be lost.

    That's all I know.

Mine doesn't do that! I have an "external" wireless card for my lap top, dunno if that makes a difference...

One of the easiest ways if you have a broadband router is to login to the router configuration, D-Link's is 192.168.0.1 for example, then click on a status option or DHCP, that will give you a listing of all the connections on your network.

MAC address filtering is AWESOME!!!!, i love the premis of it, unless a hacker spoofs your MAC address your pretty much gold.

Also, if your router has it, enable WPA-PSK, this is a more robust version of WPA (wi-fi protected access), this uses a passphrase to be able to access the network, uses aphanumeric characters. this is by far better than WEP, since WEP is super easy to crack....both are quazi simple, but its a good start. Word of advice though, your throughput will go down if you enable encryption, but it is worth it in my opinion, especially if you use credit transactions.

Download and install/start up Ethereal. www.ethereal. Watch the source IP addresses. The only ones you should see are your PC's IP's, the routers IP, and of course the broadcast IP. Anything else and you may have trouble.

It's worth it to filter based on IP's as well as MAC's if you can.

There are other ways but this should keep you busy for now.
