Default Congress may extend daylight-saving time

    CNN Daylight saving time

If Congress passes an energy bill, Americans may see more daylight-saving time.

Lawmakers crafting energy legislation approved an amendment Wednesday to extend daylight-saving time by two months, having it start on the first Sunday in March and end on the last Sunday in November.

"Extending daylight-saving time makes sense, especially with skyrocketing energy costs," said Rep. Fred Upton, R-Michigan, who along with Rep. Ed Markey, D-Massachusetts, co-sponsored the measure.

The amendment was approved by the House Energy and Commerce Committee that is putting together major parts of energy legislation likely to come up for a vote in the full House in the coming weeks.

"The more daylight we have, the less electricity we use," said Markey, who cited Transportation Department estimates that showed the two-month extension would save the equivalent of 10,000 barrels of oil a day.

The country uses about 20 million barrels of oil a day.

If there's no detriment to it, why don't they just push all time zones an hour forward permanently? (except those pesky folks in Indiana and I believe Arizona, of course)

I don't get it. We will still get the same amount of daylight each day, no matter if it's from 6am to 6pm or 7am to 7pm. So how does it make such a difference in energy consumption?

There are different amounts of sunlight in each day, depending on how the light hits the earth cause the earth is at an angle, causing summer and winter and other sorts of stuff. thats why in some places like alaska they have some days where there 23 hours of daylight or some stuff like that. I think the winter solstice has the fewest hours of light, and the summer solstice has the most.

I say if it works go for it.

How 'bout we just cut down on the workday? Shut down the computers a few hours earlier. That'd save a ton. Same pay though.

The difference is that we'll be waking up earlier, and therefore utilizing more of the natural light. Right?

So as a country we'll save 1/20th of a percent per day? IF my math is correct.

Doesn't Congress have something better to do? Let's be real, how much would that really save us?

Such as vote themselves a raise? Perhaps change the menu in the dining halls downstairs? Freedom fries for everyone, baby.

Gimme more daylight towards the evening in the fall and early spring. At least they're doing something that benefits me with that.

CaboBrian, the idea is that if you have sunlight, you're less likely to have to turn on an electrical light. More people are active in the late afternoons/evenings.

I think CaboBrian was just confused because he's under the impression that they are changing how much daylight is in a day. That's not the case, obviously, they're just changing the times when people are up and about and needing light.
