    Default What do you use to download music?

    Alright, so I got an mp3 player for my birthday recently, and I've taken an interest in CDs. However, going to buy them is such a hassle and they take up space. What legal services do you linkers use to download music? I have a Dell DJ, so I guess iTunes is out of the question and I really don't like the idea of "Napster-to-Go." Any suggestions?

    Actually, I was talking in terms of legal download services. If I really wanted to get WinMX or a similar program, I'd do that, but I have a terrible guilt complex

    You don't have to have guilt complex. Hell I don't have why you should ?

    Seriously, mp3 sharing seems to only help music industry. No way Britney's or Simpson's records would have gone 15 times multiplatinum (or how much have they) in the 80-ies.

    I'm surprised the RIAA hasn't already setup a MP3 P2P network to log people's IP addys on their own...

    OH and to answer your question;
    Shareaza
    WinMX
    Kazza-lite (the second coming)

    iTunes gives you AAC files, which is a Macintosh audio file. Dell can only play WAV, MP3 or WMA. Of course, I could probably find conversion software online.

    Is this true? If I have a Dell then I can't download music from iTunes? That doesn't seem right.

    It has to do with the encryption used to download the content. Apple has a lock on the market right now, and they use iTunes Music Store to sell iPods, and iPods to sell iTMS purchases. If you buy a Dell DJ (why?!), you can't use iTMS products. You're stuck with the Microsoft WMA products. They'll all play MP3s.

    Apple has such a strongly integrated product in the iPod, iTunes, and iTMS. It's really a pleasure to use, with very minimal hassle factor. As a system, it's totally changed the way I listen to, store, organize, and buy music.

    It's possible to use it with non-Apple players, but you've got to strip the encryption and usually change the file type. That's a pretty high hassle factor. You could just burn the songs to CD and then import them, but once again, what a sucky process.

    Any way you approach it, you're locked into one DRM of some flavor. Apple's tastes way better right now.

    Sorry, I guess I misunderstood the comment. I have a Dell PC, not a Dell DJ. Thanks for the info.
