    The "MTV Appreciation" Thread

That's right! Let's give some props to MTV! By playing mostly crappy, diluted pop music for the last 10+ years, MTV has helped shape many folks' musical tastes in ways we could never imagine. Personally, I would never have been turned on to the likes of Dream Theater and Buckethead, and classics like James Brown and Isaac Hayes if it wasn't for their movement to a "Soap Opera" format. I also would never have awakened to realize the influence MTV had over such a HUGE percentage of a demographic, and how they have pissed away a chance to actually be a valuable channel. Thank you for turning a promising music channel into one of the most indigent anamolies in modern culture!

MTV sucks. Flush it down the toilet, along side all of the shit programming they have on it.

The only thing MTV could do to redeem itself is to brek-up into different genres. i.e. MTV Rock, MTV Metal, MTV Rap, etc... Different channels for different tastes. Otherwise, it's about as useful as a broken arm...

In it's early days, MTV was pretty good-non stop videos (hell they used to play Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow in high rotation!).

It was a joke when one realised it was the only station that played commercials 24/7.

Then they found rap and reality shows, and I haven't watched since.

Guess they took a lesson from BET, when it comes to dismally dis-serving an audience.

    Why MTV Sucks Ass:

Eddie Van Halen has done more in music in the last ten years.

They have the Video Music Awards, yet they show few videos while anybody's awake.

They created MTV2 to address the problem of not showing videos. They mostly show rap and hip-hop and have added reality shows there too.

TRL butchers the requested videos to fit into the time slot. They make a big deal about playing your requests but then they only play 20 seconds of the song.

Pay-ola. Don't get me started. While Congress is hauling baseball players into committee do adress a subjuct that, in the end, only effects the individual player's health; they are ignoring huge violations of FCC rules. You can't say fuck on the air, but if you pay MTV to play an obscene video - that's okay.

MTV thinks it's cool. If you think you are cool, you are not cool.

MTV has run a number of "Doc's" about the Iraq War that are mostly anti-war. I wouldn't have a problem with that except that this week they are doing their usual spring-break extravaganza that celebrates drunken debauchery. The fact is that in the next three weeks more 19 and 20 year-olds are going to die in drunk-driving accidents and drunken stunts in this country durring spring-break than are going to die in Iraq. The holier-than-thou dorks at MTV say that the government should be held accountable for the missteps that lead to the Iraq War, yet they are the chearleaders for personal or individual destruction and humiliation.

Their on-air personalities talk "street", meaning they don't speak english-yo. Either you are part of the solution or you are part of the problem

    MTV is the problem.

In many ways, MTV and BET are indistinguishable. It seems that they are serving similar audiences these days, anyway.

VH1 used to be a good alternative, but even VH1 seems to be following suit.

    Man, do I sound old.

    Because you are.

MTV2 is...ok at best. That other channel that used to be MuchMusic plays nothing but garbage. VH1 Classic is supposed to be good...if you can get it.

    MTV and NHL suck

But in some fairness to MTV:

a: for some reason they're only giving what the audience wants

b: Much of what's on the television is crap.

I've come to know this, as more evident than ever before, cuz I'm not watching what I've been watching, at this time of year, for as long as i can remember.

Something about Orr lifting the Stanely Cup over his head had something to do with it I suppose.
But that's a story for a different thread.
