Default CANT STOP LOVING YOU "LIVE SOUND"

How did Ed get his sound for "Cant Stop Loving You" live. On the Toronto Pay Per View it sounds live there is a clean guitar simulated to sond like an acoustic, but is it "flown in" or is Ed just splitting his signal to get the 2 tones? That is one song I love to play in my VH tribute but can't get a good tone. I've contemplated just playing the majority on my Fender 12 string acoustic electric on my "upright stand" that allows me to play the acoustic with the electric still on then walk away from the acoustic.

    Any thoughts??

He used a guitar with piezo saddles that replicate acoustic sounds. Then, he either had a "Y-cable" plugged into a stereo output jack on the guitar, with one side going to his rig and the other thru the P.A., or had two separate cables doing this.

Piezo, I'd guess, unless Sammy was playing acoustic, which seems very, very unlikely (I haven't seen it.)

If you get the Who's Live In Boston DVD from the 2002 tour, Pete Townshend has a similar thing going on. He controls the blend with a knob... gets some great, clear tone. Very cool.

Looks to me that he's just using a standard Wolfgang (proto at the time) and was using the clean channel on the 5150's with a little bit of gain and chorus. I do notice him stomp a few times and it sounds like switching to a channel or an amp with a little more gain on it. I know there's flange, chorus and phase a few times in that song on the Toronto show.

    It's definitely a piezo setup.

From the "Peavey Monitor" - Volume15, Issue 1
"On the recent "Balance" tour, Van Halen road-tested six Wolfgang prototypes. "I think we've built ten or twelve guitars that I've been putzing with," says Edward, "and each one is a slight departure from the other-not radical, but different pickup configurations." Of particular interest is the piezo-equipped guitar. "We installed a piezo bridge on one guitar," says DeCola, "with Mike Christian graphite saddles and preamp. It has a volume control for the magnetic pickups, a volume control for the piezo bridge, and a stereo output. Ed uses that on certain songs ['Can't Stop Lovin' You'], where he switches between the piezo acoustic-type sound and the magnetic sound. He runs the piezos through the PA and the monitors, and he runs the magnetic pickups through his normal amp rig."

BTW, here's a few pics of that guitar for those that've never seen any images of it.
