Default Incredible guitarist to check out

Wanted to share something that happened to me on Saturday night. I went to a show for this guy named Monte Montgomery. I have been listening to him for about 2 years and wanted to see him but he never comes around to Ohio. He finally came to this area so I took some fellow guitarists to the show.

I have some of his albums and alot of bootleg recordings of him doing covers but I never expected to be floored like I was the other night.

I have seen many great guitarists over the years (VH, Satch, Nuno, Lynch, Satch, etc...) and have never witnessed such command over a guitar. The only thing I can compare it too was when I first saw Eddie do the intro to Mean Streets for the first time. However that was for about a minute or two. I had about 30 minutes of that the other night.

What made it more impressive was that it was all on acoustic!!!

He had about three or four extended jams in songs that lasted about 8 minutes each. Did a cover of Little Wing which one of my friends stated was the only thing that matched SRV's version. SRV is probably his favorite guitarist so that was quite a compliment.

Its just not a bunch of harmonic minor scales going up and down the neck. Half the time he comps off the chord progressions a la a jazz guitarist. Since he fingerpicks, he comes across different than a picker.

The other interesting thing is how he manipulates his acoustic to simulate an electric guitar. Bending the neck to act as a Floyd. Using overdrive and feedback however always being in control.

We were so awestruck that after the show, we could not compare it to anything we have seen. Its was almost too much for us.

Anyway he generally plays in Austin but is doing a few shows this week in the midwest. I figured maybe somebody would like to check him out before he goes back to Texas. I think he is in Illinois and Wisconsin this week.

You may not like the music but you should check him out. Download some of his stuff on Kazaa and I recommend, Superstition, When Will I and Romeo and Juliett.

Sorry about the novel but I just wanted to give some guy some props.

    His website is www.montemontgomery.com

LOL- Sixstring introduced me to Monte back in 94- glad to see he's making his way up north, He's an amazing guitarist. I saw him a few weeks ago here in Tx, he's from this area, so I'm lucky enough to catch him whenever he's in town. www.montemontgomery.com

He is an amazing player. I first heard of him a number of years ago while flicking through the tv. CMT, which I very rarely watch, had a show on at the time in which they were interviewing him and showing clips of him playing live. I was floored. I tried to buy some of his music at the local record store, but they couldn't find any of it anywhere. I was very impressed. He even did some amazing "tapping" ala EVH. He manages to get some amazing sounds from an acoustic, all with out of this world control and dexterity. Nice to hear he's still around.

I just heard Monte Montgomery for the first time a few months ago. He is a great guitartist and his music sounds really cool. I was definately impressed and glad I stumbled onto him.

Another good guitarist in this vein is Preston Reed, but PR is just instrumental guitar with no backing band. Monte's the better guitarist, but if you like him you should also check out Preston Reed if you haven't heard him already.

Apple's iTunes Music Store has a few of his albums available for download. I picked up some of his music from there.

I've been telling you guys for a year now that Monte is the SHIZNIT...and a good friend, too...
