    Default Rip Off Of Cathedral

Has anyone noticed in AC/DC's Live At Donnington, that during Angus' solo on Jailbreak, he is twisting his tone knob while he plays to make it sound exactally like Cathedral. Sorry if this has been mentioned, or I'm just a retard and it's cool that he did...

I haven't seen it, but its not like its the first time someone has copied Ed. Nothing to get worked up about.

I got to see John Paul Jones and his band a few years back and the guitarist used the same Cathedral technique a bunch. I would say that he hadn't mastered it quite like Eddie but it was cool to see someone else do it.

It had been used before.. I mean, one early-ish example is The Who's "Bargain." It was done long before that, though. I think Townshend does it a few times on other albums. Is it called a volume swell? I don't know. I just know that it has been used for many years. I don't know of anyone using it the way Ed did, though... that was pretty innovative. Most people used it as an effect with chords and whatnot. He really took it to the next level.

I think Jimmy Page did a few volume swells on "Tea For One".

George Harrison used it on the Beatles "I Need You", in the mid-60's.

People shot the "hook shot" before, but Kareem perfected it.

Every guitarist since the beginning of time has used volume swells.*
To my knowledge, Eddie is the first, or one of the first, to do it rhythmically with a delay set to repeat the notes as they do.

Brian May was using it during his guitar solo well before Eddie. Set to two-three different delays.

There were a few guys on the trip I went to that were watching that on their DVD player. I didn't get to see anything but "Thunderstruck". I wouldn't doubt that he did that. I think I heard somewhere that he was good friends with Ed (or was it that they hated each other? I dunno, my brain's fried right now!).

No one IMO has done the volume swell with delay (echo) as great as Eddie...it sounds like a violin people..don't forget that Eddie really doesn't report to have listened to a lot of "innovative" rock guitarists...so I think that he comes up with a lot stuff himself, OR "came" up with a lot of that stuff...whichever way, Eddie is the Rock Guitar God!
