Default Big D need help soloing in key etc

Hey guys please bear with me for a sec. I have been playing for 10 years. I never took lessons, just learned on my own. So I can play. I am not sure if my technique is good or correct or whatever, but it works for me. However, since like 7th grade, which is about 9 years ago, I havent really played with anyone I just jammed on my own in my room. SO my knowledge of guitar theory is lacking, and I have always had trouble figuring out what key a song is in and which scale to solo in. But I just got garageband and I plug my guitar right in and i can see what key a song is in, the only problem is, i dont know where that scale starts. I know the major penantonic scale that covers the fretboard, I have it in an old guitar magazine, but I dont know where the scale should start. Say something is in C, what fret is that first note on that scale on the E string? Can anyone shed some basic light on this basic question for me, I am kinda embaraased about it but there is no better place for me to learn this. Oh I also have my guitar tuned down a half step so keep that in mind...I hope you guys can help!

Nothing to be embarassed about. If you don't know where a C scale should start then I would suggest you learn how to find the notes on the fretboard otherwise your just guessing.

I'm not a guitar player,I'm a bass player, but this is kind of the same thing for bass. That would be what notes to use when the guitar player is playing in a certain key. The answer is knowing the scales!!! Take G for example, if you know that song, then a song in the key of G then you can use any of those notes in the G scale (like B and C) they will work nicely with the song and sound right. Hope I helped.

Yeah, you have got to learn your scales. Just do a google search for guitar scales and you will come across all of them at one site or another. Good luck!!

Here's a great link for fretboard mapping:

American Coast Guard: Back off Canadians we got them.
Canadian Coast Guard: You back off hosers, they are in Canadian waters, eh.
American Coast Guard: Beat it you puck smacking maple suckers!
Canadian Coast Guard: Take a hike you Shatner stealing Mexico touchers!

Bart: Who the hell is this?
Jack Bauer: I’m Jack Bauer, who the hell is this?
Bart: Me, er… I’m Ahmed Adudi
Jack: Chloe, get me all you can on Ahmed Adudi… Does anyone there know Ahmed Adudi?
Chloe O’Brien: Ahmed Adudi; wealthy Saudi financier… Disappeared into Afghanistan in the late 90s…
    Jack: … Really?
Chloe (ironically): No Jack it’s a joke name, you’re being set up.
    Jack: DAMMIT!
