    Default Looking for advice!!

Ok, I played guitar for years..and hit a wall...don't know if any of you understand that, but I got to a point where it was work just to pick the damn thing up. I was never what you would call an acomplished guitarist, that was the next level that I just did not have to motivation to get to..like I said it was work, not fun anymore. So, a few months ago I bought a bass...just hoping to motivate me to play my guitar more, just keep me active in music...and the thing is, now I love the freakin' bass like you can't believe...I think it is what I should have always been playing. Any tips for a new bassist who just switched from the guitar?? Any little quirks or landmines I should look out for? How do I keep from hitting that wall with this instrument? Thanks, just looking for a tip or two...I always love to talk music.

Well i've played bass from the begining, I havent switched over from anything but all I can tell you is to stretch out your fingers and use your pinky. As you get good your pinky should be able to reach a 5th fret while your index is on the first. To get used to the large frets and such I would advise just practicing a simple G-scale. This should also get you used to moving around the fingerboard. I'll post it in tab here...

    I. Keep each finger within it's fret (index on 2nd fret middle on 3rd ring on 4th pinky on 5th) and only use that specific finger for that specific fret.

    G----------------------------
    D-----------------2--4--5----
    A--------2--3--5-------------
    E--3--5----------------------

Now playing the same scale only with the higher notes

    G--------2--5--7--9--11--12
    D--5--7---------------------
    A---------------------------
    E---------------------------

Now going back down the scale from where we left off and then back up

    G--12--11--9----------------------------------------------------
    D-------------12--10--9-------------------9--10--12--14--16--17
    A-------------------------12--10--10--12------------------------
    E----------------------------------------------------------------

You can even keep going up from there but I don't wanna type more. Try things like that with other notes and just gain a feel for the strings and the board. Don't use a pick either! If you need some easy tabs I can write you a tab for something, just email me at vhcrossingover@yahoo.com

    Good luck!

Yup. As much as it blows to work on scales all of the time you have to. Work a lot with petatonic scales as well. And familiarize yourslef with the blues, then use that to understand where bass players are coming from in songs, and then you will be able to write your own stuff.

For me the most fun thing about the bass is playing a walking bass line.

My biggest peave about bass players (musicians?) is not knowing the difference between major, minor and when to play a 7 or flatted 7. You'd think that to be Music 101 but ya know...

Yeah, you would think so. A lot of people with no musical background can tell the difference between major and minor when they hear it, so where are these "musicians" learning their stuff?
