    Anniversary of VH III...looking back

It was on March 17, 1998, that Van Halen released "Van Halen III", with their newly acquired singer, Gary Cherone, who became the third singer of Van Halen. Before the band even released any music, they were already prejudged, considering that Gary became the third singer, and many fans were teased by VH's appearance at the 1996 MTV VMA's with DLR, all on the same stage, and then releasing two new songs with DLR on BoV 1. During it all was to Sammy's surprise, as he was left out of the dark.
Looking back, it didn't look good for the publicity of the band with all of the forementioned happenings. Nevertheless, it was a FANTASTIC album, with over an hour of amazing music! There was a lot of variety on the album, with powerful ballads as Without You and Josephina, hard rockin' songs with insane solos and great background vocals, such as One I Want, Fire in the Hole, and Year to the Day, and more. The cover album is totally appropriate, as VH III shoots a cannonball to the gut of you when listening to the album (in a good way, although some took it to the gut as a gut check in a bad way).
I thought it was a great album, just listening to the album as a whole. Some would say that it is unfair to compare it to other VH albums, others would say that it holds its own.
It's a wonderful album, that is overlooked and underrated and gets lots of undeserving flack from some VH fans, and from the media and other bands and fans. It would have been great to hear a follow-up album, perhaps to prove wrong to the doubters and the critics, but it seems like Gary took it really hard of how personal some of the attacks and bashing were thrown his way. What did you guys think of the album at the time of the release? What do you guys think of it now? What are some of your memories and some of your favorite songs on the album?

Well, music is always in the ear of the beholder.

I'll tell ya this, I get goosebumps whenever I hear that "outro" guitar work in Once.

I think 3 is what it is. Solid guitar playing together with mediocre singing, questionable production, and confusing direction from a band we expected so much more from. I pop 3 in once in awhile, but only because I like it, not love it.

To me it is the Eddie Van Halen solo project...I compare it to liking Sam's two new tunes back in 94 on unboxed. Fun, Sammy-like, decent, even likeable tunes, but not VAN HALEN.

I like III. I love the song writing and the lyrics, but as said before...the production was really lacking. The overall sound was a big difference from Balance. I do remember a lot of fans saying (don't kill me for this)...that III was like Fair Warning. It came out to a lot of bad press and dissapointment, but now stands as one of, if not the best VH album. Maybe we will look back at III in 10-15 years and see it for what it was and is. Eddie said it best, it takes more than one listen...it's too bad that is more then most people gave it.

Loved the CD from day 1. Cherone was never given a chance - to change lead singer with such success once was hard enuff, to win the critics over twice was always gonna be impossible! He ain't Roth or Hagar - wot did people expect??!?

What a great album is "Van Halen 3". Great lyrics and great songs out there. Van Halen Mark III also made well alive. At least, Gary sang many powerful songs from Dave Era and Sammy Era.

3's a great cd. Gary's probably the only Van Halen singer that didn't say anything negative about former VH singers. I'd honestly like to see him still front VH, I'm sure that after a while people would have taken a liken to him.

I just don't get all the love that III is receiving on this site the last couple of months. I can understand loving it if you are a guitar player and the main reason you listen to VH is to hear Ed wail. But these songs are average at best. The song structure for the majority of songs is poor, Gary's vocals sound so strained that they make Dave from Me Wise Magic sound like Pavarotti. The songs just ramble with no apparent purpose, kind of like some of my posts. Throw on top bad vocal arrangements and melodies and some terrible sounding production, and voila, you have the steaming shit pie that is VHIII.

There is a reason that it has been out seven years and not gone platinum, it isn't that good.

That being said I would have loved to hear the follow up after having a full tour under their belts as a band, I am sure it would have been much better. I would much prefer having Gary in the band instead of losing the last six years to any output whatsoever and the current Sammy Hagar tribute band they are now.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Ah yes! that was a good day to have a new VH cd spinning away...
I'd read some reviews beforehand saying it was unlike previous VH albums, and that the first track was some piano ballad instrumental thing..

But I have to say, I was impressed with VH III. I dont think it was as terrible as some others may think.. I think everyone can write whatever they feel, and at that point, those were the songs.

I always thought Gary probably had a pretty big influence on Ed back then - the whole thing seemed more serious than previous recordings with Dave or Sam, and it was probably a welcome change for a while.

Best song in my opinion is Year To The Day. Without You kicked some arse also, and i think i was truly surprised when i heard Primary Righteous.
