Default Guitarist rankings from Metal Hammer..Ed gets the shaft again

Now the fuck is Slash or those dudes from Meghaddush ahead of Ed...

Iommi is Metal Hammer’s No. 1 Best Metal Guitarist

Tony tops the poll of ‘Riff Lords’ - Best Metal Guitarists - in Metal Hammer’s March issue. The magazine praises Tony’s ‘highly distinctive style of fretsmanship that’s economical yet crushingly effective’. And it anticipates the comments from readers of “it was so obvious that you guys were going to pick Iommi” by saying ‘any way we tried to cut it, we just couldn’t escape the fact that Tony Iommi is THE man!’

The top ten (of the 50 listed) are:

    1. Tony Iommi

    2. Dave Murray, Adrian Smith & Janick Gers – Iron Maiden

    3. Jimmy Page – Led Zeppelin

    4. Kirk Hammett & James Hetfield – Metallica

    5. Glenn Tipton & K.K. Downing – Judas Priest

    6. Slash – Velvet Revolver / Guns N’ Roses

    7. Daron Malakian – System Of A Down

    8. Kerry King & Jeff Hanneman – Slayer

    9. Marten Nagstrom & Fredrik Thordendal – Meshuggah

    10. Edward Van Halen

"Well, he's an intelligent, well-read guy. But it's like he can't connect the dots somehow." (EVH Guitar World, March 1998).

GP: "Did you use a pick for "Spanish Fly"?

EVH: "Yeah, except for the part near the end that sounds like Montoya or something."

I love Maiden,Metallica and GNR but give me a fucking break, what the hell is it with people?
I sometimes wonder if people have actually sat down and really listened to Van Halen because if they had they would see how ridiculous these lists are.
You can't half tell that Metal Hammer is an English mag.

It's just proof that almost every music magazine out there is a fucking joke. I think alomst all of those guitarists on the list should be there but Ed has to be in the top 5 automatically. I would put Ed at 1 but he should at least be in the top 5 by default.

The people that shouldn't be on the list are the guys from Meshuggah and System of A Down. To put Ed after them takes away all credibility from Metal Hammer.

Janick Gers!!!!!!???? Give me a break and a half, while some of the other guys who shouldn't be before Eddie, do deserve to be there like Dave and Adrian, and Jimmy page, there is no way Janick Gers should be anywhere near the top 30 as far as I'm concerend.

The ony reason he is still in Maiden is they feel sorry for him, why else would he be playing the same solos as Adrian or Dave during live showsat the same time as they are playing them. I saw The Trooper and some other stuff and Janick was playing Adrians solos along with him. That is gay!

It is CRIMINAL to not have Ed in at LEAST the top 3! Obviously, I would have him at #1.

Seriously guys, who cares? Anyone who knows anything about music and great guitar playing knows Eddie is one of the guys at the top. Where's Steve Vai and Joe Satriani? Come on, this list is a complete joke and it's obvious, don't worry about it. Heck, I'm better than some of the guys they have on there..........

I've gotta agree. Calling the top 3 on that list " riff lords ", is kind of like calling a volkswagon a high speed race car.
    That list is pretty pathetic.

I've never thought of Van Halen as a particularly "metal" band, anyways. Always Rock, not Metal. Who knew?

Eddie is not a metal guitarist. He's rock. Frankly I'm shocked he's even on there. Not because he dosen't deserve it, but because it's not his genre. Same with Slash.

All in all It's a respectable list. Should read like this though....

    1. Toni Iomi - The father of heavy metal guitar.
    2. Dimebag - Finished with Pantera what Iomi started in Sabbath.
    3. Zakk Wylde - The best metal player out there.
    4. James Hetfield - Rhythm guitar master. Screw Kirk Hammet
    5. I've
    6. lost
    7. interest
    8. in
    9. the
    10. rest.

Sorry, couldn't finish what I started.

    I agree with you.

Slash and Eddie shouldn't be on that list. In my honest opinion, you could flip a coin as to who would go ahead of the next between Slash and Ed. Two amazing guitar players with two different styles.

Yeah, my list would go something like yours...

    1 - Tony Iommi
    2 - Zakk Wylde
    3 - Randy Rhodes
    4 - James Hetfield
    5 - Dimebag Darrell

and the rest don't really matter to me.

Since when was Van Halen "heavy metal"???

    During "Fair Warning"??? Yeah, right.

Hard rock, at best. Van Halen was always *genuine*, and that gave them street-cred from the unpopular kids, who also happened to attend shows.

I think it's totally fair. In fact, I think it's an *accomplishment* that he's even in the top-10.

The top 4 ABSOLUTELY deserve to be ahead of Eddie in the heavy metal department.

He's not a better metal guitarist than Zakk, Dime, Iommi, or Hetfield, that's for certain. Hetfield is the best heavy metal rythm guitarist in the history of the art. Period. End game.

Eddie is a better "rock" guitarist than all of them, and a much better songwriter. But his accomplishments in true Metal aren't as good.

What "heavy metal" song does Eddie even contribute?

    Light Up the Sky??
    Mean Street?
    DOA???
    Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love???

Not one of those songs is even as metal as "No More Tears" or "Cemetary Gates", or 500 other metal tunes, even by late 70's standards.

Was Eddie's photo in Metal magazines back then? Yes. Just like Star Wars characters were on Rolling Stone, Saturday Night Live, and the Muppets. When you're THAT popular, anyone will put you on the cover of their mag, especially a hard-rock band with as much street-credibility as VH had.

Wasn't there a time when Hard Rock and Heavy Metal were essentially the same thing? They were both considered Heavy Metal. Compare "British Steel" and VH's first three albums. British Steel is a classic metal album, but the VH stuff is just as heavy -- it's just a bit more raw sounding... and the melodies are generally happier and more "fun." IMO, hard rock and heavy metal are pretty much the same genre. It's just easier that way.

Anyway, why is Ed so far down? They saw what it did when Rolling Stone did it. They knew it'd make people talk about their list. Whoa... we've fallen into their trap. I'll bet they never saw THAT coming...

If EVH isn't a "metal" guitarist, then what the hell is Jimmy Page doing on that list, and so high at that? If he's there as a "metal pioneer," why not Pete Townshend? I Can See For Miles, Live At Leeds, Baba O'Riley.. those songs and album were early hard rock masterpieces and they paved the way for heavy metal as much as anything else... and probably more. The big power chords that are Pete's trademark are as heavy metal as anything.

    Metal isn't "happy".

Metal is anger, depression, aggression, survival, consequences, revenge, intelligence, and sacrifice. Metal is an angry, piercing music with a violent blade on it's head, stabbing forward through the sad irony of "reality".

Classic examples: Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Pantera, Metallica

Pop Bands faking/capitalizing on genre: Twisted Sister, Quiet Riot, WASP

Hard Rock is partying, f*cking, drugging, enjoying life to the athletic fullest, or being aggressive to the athletic fullest. Hard Rock is rock n' roll music with an athletic, sporty, aggressive shield on the front.

Classic Examples: Van Halen, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Rush, AC/DC, Aerosmith

Pop Bands faking/capitalizing on genre: Winger, Firehouse, Warrant, Bon Jovi, and later.....Aerosmith

To be certain, you've got mid-80s Pop-bands like Dokken, Twisted Sister, Poison, Quiet Riot, Bon Jovi, etc., whom I happen to appreciate, but they don't sincerely fit into either category. They were more like Pop Music's take on the metal/rock phenomenon happening on MTV. Even Dee Snider would tell you that.

As a guitar fan, I happen to find awesomeness in almost all forms of guitar, so in that respect, I can even dig Winger.
