$500 Strat. Good deal or not?

Found a mint - not a single scratch - Fender black strat. Rosewood neck. Has the David Gilmour EMG pickup system. The serial number starts with an "I", so I think that makes it a Japanese made model.

    $500 a good price?

    I found some more information:

A limited number of these "I" series guitars were made in '89 and '90. They were made for the export market and have Made in USA stamped on the heel of the neck.

Don't know anything about these, but considering what Strats go for, even the Squiers, then I'd say yes.

The only way to tell is to know the serial no., and whether it's on the head or back of the neck.
EMG pickups weren't a factory option on strats as far as I know, so they're aftermarket, and I haven't heard of a Gilmore sig. strat.
You can tell more if you take the neck off and look at the neck heel and neck pocket on the body, as well as how the body id routed under the pick guard.
The EMG system is active so the electronics have been changed.
I've seen some Korean and indonesian strats with the I prefix, but it wouldn't be worth putting a set of EMG's into, so it's highly unlikely.
Again, looking in the neck pocket and inside body pockets would tell you more.
If it says squire it's not a good deal. If it says stratocaster, with no squire anywhere, then it is japanese, or possibly US, either one with EMG's being a very good deal for 500., cause the only problem with the japanese strats was the lower end electronics, and someone took care of that.

Correction: It has "Made in U.S.A." stamped into the heel of the neck...to be exact.

Well, if it's a USA made neck then it stands to reason it's either a US made neck and body, or an aftermarket US made fender neck which is every bit as good, believe me. The gilmore pickup system with all the lectronics is worth a couple of hundred by itself.
Do you know if the body is alder, and is it a large or small headstock?
At this point I'd go by how it sounds cause it appears you got a good deal.

I took the neck off this morning and snapped a photo of the initials and some other numbers at the bottom of the heel. I have no way to post the pic. I also do not know what type of wood the body is; there were no markings whatsoever anywhere in the body cavity that I could find. The EMG pickups have a "JA" sticker on them.

I can tell you this - the axe sounds and plays awesome. It has this sweet silky timbre that comes alive with a soft touch. It stays in tune under soft trem use. I may squeeze a touch of graphite on the nut.

All in all, I am pleased so far.

That's what it's all about bud. Good for you, enjoy the guitar.
A lot of fender bodies have no markings on them at all.

If you do go the graphite route, don't use regular pencil lead. It's mixed with powered clay and doesn't lubricate nearly as well as pure powered graphite. Go to an art supply shop and either buy a little bottle of artist's pure powdered graphite, or an artists graphite sketch pencil, which also contains mostly pure graphite.
