    Default Finally

i finally took some time, went to jfrocks and printed out some tab for 2 songs i love.
1 is unchained, the other is women in love.

and finally, i learned them last night!!
i can now officially say i can plaqy the opening to unchained and it actually sounds accurate!!i will try and learn the rest as well.
then i only wanted to learn the outro chords to women in love, which i did and was so inspired that that sound was coming from my hands that i tried the rest of the song!
how the hell do you do that tapping harmonics intro?? lots of practice!!
but then i learned the chord progression to the song and i am even deeper in love with the music..to have those different power chords that are simple, yet so incredible, at my fingertips makes me feel like...well, like...
    well,...almost like Sucka!!~

    wooohooo...what a night..i am reborn again!

oh, if anyone has any feedback/advice on playing those harmonics or anything in those songs, pls speak freely....i really appreciate it

The intro is apart of that pattern that Jake and I were telling you about. Ed likes to play in that box there, and that intro is a prime example of it. One thing that you must understand is that on the recording the guitars are doubled, so that's why you get that huge sound. I used to get frustrated as to why I could never get the right sound for it, but once I heard the guitars were doubled I completely understood. Just take your time with it dude, and play a real legato style. Just lay back and let your fingers do the work. It's a bitch at first, but I can play it pretty easily now.

    Pert , just a note .
Remember that you have to be in dropped D for Unchained ! When you ride that E string between chords , it sounds much better with the string dropped down a step . Just FYI

Unchained is actually more like Db, isn't it? I think that's why I never
figured out more of their tunes - you have to tune to the particular song's
tuning every time. The trickiest part though (for me), is the timing of
the prechorus ("thought you'd never miss me..."). Weird. Made me
appreciate ed's sense of rhythm and phrasing even more.

Yeah, for whatever reason much of there stuff is tuned down a half step. I always thought it had something to do with DLR's vocal range (*not* a knock), but maybe that's just what the guitar was tuned to when they were recording. I seem to remember Ed saying that they never really tuned, other than to each other.

well, i gotta crawl first!! but it wont be long before im runnin'...

i did tune down just a half step for unchained because it was the same tuning for women in love..tonight ill drop the e down to the d..

sucka, what the hell is a legato?
and if you would, explain to me the 'shape' again...i recognized that the long harmoinic tapping for the itnro consists of 'chords' that are tapped out as individual notes..like he is picillating on a chord..only its fingers...then, when i get to the fret to tap on, say the 19th fret, do i tap the left or right fretbar and am i tapping directly or what?

i'll be playing a bit in the dark tonight as well!!

lodeji, i'd love to hear you do a acoustic interpretation of unchained or women in love on that fat-ass 12 string!!!

can we do tab on this board..is it possible to write tab on here?

and to be honest, i always thought ed tuned down because of the B string..it seems to harmonize better at the flat step rather than the major step...

    le∑ga∑to:

In a smooth, even style without any noticeable break between the notes. Used chiefly as a direction.

The shape that I'm refferring too can be done on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th strings. If you can get a tab of the solo for Dance The Night Away you'll see exactly what I'm talking about. If not I'll just show you in person, but it's not a difficult thing to grasp. If you can understand that solo to Dance The Night Away then you shouldn't have a problem moving on to Women In Love.

Looking back though, I didn't get this song until I stopped trying to learn it. I used to get so damn frustrated with getting the sound right that I just gave up. Then one day I picked up my guitar and it just came to me. So just try to keep an open mind with it and with time it'll come. If you don't have the tab I'll get it to ya.

well, for one, you gotta tell me where you tap on the fret..i always tap on the fret itself, not on the fretboard..but is it directly over or it or what? sometimes i get real clear artificial harmonics, other times just a dull ring...it seems that you have to have the gain way up and the drive way up as well...

and dance the night away? i love the solo, but that's a bit advanced right now for me...i want to get these two down..although i dont think ill ever get the nuances of unchained...
next , ill probably try little dreamer!!

also, what did u mean by doubled guitars?

It is very hard to play when you listen to the vocals at the same time...I learned this segment by not listening to the vocals, listen only the guitar and drums...it helped me, hopefully you too.

Tap on the string directly above the fret.
Doubled guitars in this situation are 2 guitars where recorded at the same time...a pretty cool effect. Randy Rhoads doubled his solos quite a bit to get that THICK studio sound.

tecchnically they re not recorded at the same time unless ed had four arms;wink; its also called overdubbing....you record a guitar track then they play it back and you record your guitar again on another track , thus making it sound like two guitars are playing at the same time.

I think Ed dropped his tunning half step to Eb so that he could ease the tension on the strings...it makes the guitar easier to play.

Hes not the first or last however, SRV played in Eb as well...sometimes it does help the singers...

no doubt about the tension on the strings...but ive played on guitars that were tuned standard but the strings were real loose and stretched...some guys talk about boiling strings, etc...does that really do anything??

plus, tuning in the flat just gives the overall sound more kick-ass to it,imo

Yeah, a lot of the 80s metal guys tuned down a half step, and then when
you drop to D, you get a real low and heavy growl - a la Unchained. These
days,a lot of the metal guys are playing 7 strings where they get even lower
by tuning down the low B - which is already real fucking low for gtr. If only
    they knew how to play...

PS - Yeah, that's how I finally got Unchained, Brew Crew, by turning the
balance hard left. I'm still not sure I got the voicing of the chords he using
right, though. How do you (or anyone else) play it?
