    Matthew Vaughn Helming X-Men 3
    Source: ComingSoon!

Ain't-It-Cool-News has confirmed that Layer Cake director Matthew Vaughn will direct X-Men 3 for 20th Century Fox. Bryan Singer directed the first two films of the franchise and is now shooting Superman.

The anticipated third film is expected to center on the Dark Phoenix saga. Both Simon Kinberg and Zak Penn wrote scripts, but the site says the studio will use Penn's draft for the movie.

In related news, while Hugh Jackman (who is also producing), Famke Janssen, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming and more are all coming back, Halle Berry still isn't sure. She tells XMenFilms.net:

I have not read the script. All I have asked, is that if I come back as Storm, she need to be closer to the comic book. So, if they have in fact written her closer to the comic book character, then I'm in. If not, I'm out. I hope I'm in though. I love Storm, and really want to be part of the last film.

Fox and Marvel Studios are eyeing a Memorial Day, 2006 release date for X-Men 3.

Bradley Raymond Directing Toy Story 3
    Source: ComingSoon!

Bradley Raymond will direct Toy Story 3, which Walt Disney Pictures is planning for a 2008 theatrical release. Raymond previously helmed direct-to-DVD/video Disney titles The Lion King 1 and The Hunchback of Notre Dame II.

Disney Feature Animation is making the third film without Pixar and basing the next installment on a script by young writer Jared Stern. Stern developed a story idea for the long-in-the-works "TS3" on spec while a member of Disney's Feature Animation Writing Program.

Stern's new take is expected to advance the "Toy Story" franchise by taking the characters on the road and out of Andy's room. Stern is also understood to have invented a couple of new characters for the next installment.

    American Gangster Gets Another Shot
    Source: ComingSoon!

Universal Pictures and Imagine are ready to give American Gangster another chance with Hotel Rwanda writer/director Terry George, reports Variety.

In October, weeks before production was set to begin, the studio pulled the plug because of fears that the period film would cost more than $100 million. Antoine Fuqua was to direct Denzel Washington and Benicio Del Toro, who both had pay-or-play deals.

Imagine's Brian Grazer and Universal vice chairman Scott Stuber will redevelop the film with George into a $50 million project. It is rumored that George's Hotel Rwanda star Don Cheadle may play the lead role of Frank Lucas, the mastermind of a scheme to smuggle heroin into the U.S. in the caskets of soldiers killed in Vietnam.

Del Toro had been set to play narcotics lawman Richie Roberts, who brought down the Harlem drug kingpin called Superfly and then drafted Lucas to help bring down the dirty cops and overseas conspirators who made it easy to import heroin into the U.S.

Selick Animating Wall and the Wing
    Source: ComingSoon!
Independent animation company Vinton Studios has made a deal for the rights to children's novel The Wall and the Wing, with Henry Selick (The Nightmare Before Christmas) attached to direct the project as a CGI feature. Variety reports the magical adventure book will be published by HarperCollins in 2006.

"This is a perfect fit since it already has the scale of a movie and it has a wonderful sense of humor," said Selick. He said he'll likely co-direct along with another Vinton employee.

Selick is working on the upcoming Tim Burton's Corpse Bride for Warner Bros. and developing an adaptation of Neil Gaiman's Coraline, which he will write and direct.

Vinton will also work on an animated feature version of Roald Dahl's The Fantastic Mr. Fox for Revolution Studios. Wes Anderson is currently writing with Noah Baumbach and is attached to helm.

Dykstra Skips Spidey 3 for Hot Wheels
    Source: ComingSoon!

John Dykstra, who just won an Oscar for the visual effects in Spider-Man 2, has signed to become the visual effects designer for director McG's Hot Wheels rather than joining Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3. Both films will be released by Columbia Pictures.

"I will miss all the terrific people I worked with on 'Spider-Man,' " Dykstra told The Hollywood Reporter. "But this is a great opportunity. I'm an adrenaline junkie; it's an avocation. And what's cool about 'Hot Wheels' is it allows us to explore the language of cars -- from NASA Formula One, to tuners, hot rods, classics, dinosaur cars, monster trucks and so on."

Sony Imageworks' Scott Stokdyk, who also won an Oscar for his work on Spider-Man 2, has stepped in to fill Dykstra's shoes on Spider-Man 3. Dykstra was visual effects designer on the first two "Spider-Man" films, on which Stokdyk was visual effects supervisor.

Frank Oz Puts Up with Horrible Bosses
    Source: ComingSoon!

Frank Oz is in talks to direct Horrible Bosses for New Line Cinema, says The Hollywood Reporter. The studio acquired the spec comedy script by Michael Markowitz last month for Brett Ratner and Jay Stern to produce through their Rat Entertainment company.

The dark comedy revolves around three friends who decide to team up to murder their unbearable bosses.

Oz most recently directed The Stepford Wives and The Score. Oz also voiced Yoda again in Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith.

The Hobbit at Least 3 Years Away
    Source: ComingSoon!

Director Peter Jackson says it will be at least three years before production may start on "The Lord of the Rings" prequel, The Hobbit, says the AAP.

"Three or four years would be accurate, I would say," Jackson said about the possible film.

Jackson this weekend took a break from his busy schedule filming King Kong in Auckland, stopping by Sydney's Powerhouse Museum to check out the "Lord of the Rings" exhibition.

The rights to J.R.R. Tolkien's novel, "The Hobbit," are split between MGM and New Line Cinema. Jackson said he was keen to return to Middle Earth but that MGM's sale to a consortium led by Sony made the project's future unclear.

"I think there is probably a will and a desire to try and get it made," he added. "But I think it's gonna be a lot of lawyers sitting in a room trying to thrash out a deal before it will ever happen."

Swank Aboard Dark Castle's The Reaping
    Source: ComingSoon!
The Hollywood Reporter says two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank is in final talks to star in Dark Castle Entertainment's latest horror entry, The Reaping, for Warner Bros. Pictures. Dark Castle is run by Joel Silver and Robert Zemeckis.

The supernatural tale centers on a myth debunker (Swank) who travels to a small, religious town in Texas to investigate occurrences that appear to be the 10 Biblical plagues.

James Cox is directing the script, which is based on a spec by Brian Rousso that has been rewritten by Chad and Carey Hayes. The Hayes brothers wrote the upcoming Dark Castle production House of Wax.

Dark Castle's past horror movies include House on Haunted Hill, Thirteen Ghosts, Ghost Ship and Gothika.

Swank is readying to shoot The Black Dahlia for Brian De Palma. She just won the Best Actress Oscar for Million Dollar Baby, and she had previously won the award for Boys Don't Cry.

    "Robots" Take Over
    Source: E!Online

The computer-generated comedic tale of a bunch of scrappy droids trying to avoid being sent to the scrap heap earned took over the box office with $36.5 million, per studio estimates Sunday.

Robots scored as the second-best March opener ever, behind only the GCI prehistoric beasties' tale Ice Age, which also happened to be the brain child of Chris Wedge. The frosty 'toon iced the competition with $46.3 million in 2002, on its way to eventually grossing $176.3 million.

Wedge's latest heavy-metal debut was considered particularly noteworthy in the face of strong competition from last week's number one, Vin Diesel's taking-care-of-tykes comedy The Pacifier. The latter film, also a PG entry and targeted at the same family audience, only dropped 41 percent with $18 million, bringing its two-week haul to $54.3 million.

Fox distribution chief Bruce Snyder dubbed Robots' opening gross "wonderful," while trumpeting its broad demographic. Costing around $75 million to produce and featuring a slew of A-list vocal turns--including Ewan McGregor, Robin Williams, Halle Berry, Mel Brooks, Amanda Bynes, Drew Carey, Paul Giamatti and Jim Broadbent--the movie was slotted into 3,776 sites, where it averaged $9,666. The audience, overlooking so-so reviews, was made up of 32 percent parents, 44 percent children, and 23 percent unescorted ticket buyers--mainly teens. Noting that those figures only add up to 99 percent, Snyder joked that he didn't know the composition of the missing 1 percent.

Disney's The Pacifier expanded by 35 sites to play at 3,166 locations, averaging $5,704. But the icy reception for John Travolta's Be Cool continued. MGM's Get Shorty sequel dropped 56 percent in its second week with $10.3 million in third place. The mobster-in-Hollywood comedy averaged $3,203 per 3,216 sites; its two-week gross is just $38.4 million.

Travolta's old Pulp Fiction pal Bruce Willis is only hoping his latest, Hostage, could have that kind of bottom line. While the R-rated Miramax release had a slightly better per-screen average--$4,634 at 2,123 theaters--the film only ransomed $9.8 million in its opening weekend, attracting less than 10 percent of moviegoers for the top 10 films to debut in fourth.

In limited release, the clear winner was The Upside of Anger. The R-rated New Line entry, a well reviewed drama about a romance between the emotionally bruised Joan Allen and Kevin Costner, averaged a heartwarming $25,087 at just nine sites for $225,783.

Also opening well was Millions a modern-day fable directed by Danny Boyle and starring James Nesbitt as the father of two young sons who find a heap of cash. The PG British import, distributed by Fox Searchlight (which has had a carefully planned rollout and clever marketing strategy for its hit Sideways), averaged $14,597 at five sites in New York and Los Angeles for $72,987. Building on good reviews and word of mouth, the film will begin its slow expansion next weekend, moving into 12 sites.

In My Country, director John Boorman's treatise about the evils of South African apartheid starring Juliette Binoche and Samuel L. Jackson, didn't hit home. At nine sites, the R-rated Sony Pictures release averaged just $2,633 for $23,698.

Finally, with Easter fast approaching, Mel Gibson's revamped The Passion Recut hit theaters. While the blood and brutality were edited down, Newmarket released the film without a rating and it averaged just $236 at 954 sites for $225,000. Of course, the original R-rated The Passion of the Christ, now available on DVD, has already grossed $264.5 million domestically.

Overall, the top 12 movies grossed an estimated $103.1 million, down just 1 percent from this time last year when Gibson's Passion ruled, but 5 percent off from last weekend.

Here's a recap of the top 10 films, based on preliminary estimates compiled by Exhibitor Relations; final figures are due Monday:

    1. Robots, $36.5 million
    2. The Pacifier, $18 million
    3. Be Cool, $10.3 million
    4. Hostage, $9.8 million
    5. Hitch, $8.7 million
    6. Million Dollar Baby, $5.075 million
    7. Diary of a Mad Black Woman, $5 million
    8. Constantine, $3.6 million
    9. Man of the House, $1.8 million
    10. Cursed, $1.5 million

Johansson up for next Indiana Jones?
    Source: Moviehole

According to Australia's NW Magazine, Steven Spielberg has his eye on Oscar Winner Scarlett Johnansson for a role in the next, long-awaited, "Indiana Jones" adventure.

Apparently the script for the new film features a sidekick for Indiana Jones - a female companion, and Johansson's name was suggested to Spielberg by Tom Cruise (who is working with the 'Lost in Translation' star on "Mission : Impossible 3") who are working on "War of the Worlds" together.

"Steven was saying there is a shortage of young actresses who can carry off a strong role", says an insider. "He considered Natalie Portman, but she's too connected with 'Star Wars' - Tom suggested Scarlett".

The insider adds, "She hasn't done anything like that and indications are she might be interested, although nothing has been decided".

There's such a huge age difference between Scarlett and Harry that hopefully that means - it is Hollywood though, they'd feel fine about teaming an Olsen up with Sean Connery if they could make it happen - they won't be playing lovers, but merely a wise-man/young sidekick duo, or, just speculation, she's playing Indy's daughter?

Many moons ago there were plans for Indiana Jones to have a brother in the new film - with Kevin Costner the rumoured frontrunner for the role.

All Sorts of Phantasm Remake Info
    Source: DarkHorizons

Don Coscarelli, creator of the "Phantasm" films, told Sci-Fi Wire how he wound up in final talks with New Line Cinema to oversee a fifth Tall Man tale. "About a year ago it became apparent that there was renewed interest by the studios in the cult-classic horror franchises from the late '70s and early '80s. I was subsequently solicited by a number of executives about Phantasm."

He went on to reveal that "The general take these execs had was to do a generic remake and cast it with young actor-types from the WB network. This did not appeal to me. But I did give it some thought and came upon an approach which I thought might work for the 'mall audiences' these executives covet, and at the same time also appeal to our hardcore, longtime 'phans'."

New Line exec Jeff Katz has been crucial in the remake's launch it seems - "[Katz] 'got' the concept and was rabid in his enthusiasm to bring us into the studio, he was also keenly aware that Angus Scrimm [the Tall Man, the films' creepy and lethal grave robber,] and Reggie Bannister [Reggie] would be crucial to the success of any further Phantasms. When I asked Angus if he was ready to pull on the tall boots and continue his invasion of the planet, he said, 'Tell them I'm not ready to hang up the old balls yet'."

Coscarelli also confirmed he won't be directing this Phantasm, just producing. Meanwhile, last night Reggie Bannister had a chat room session over at Phantasm's End and he delivered some interesting points. Amongst them he mentioned New Line are keen to bring in Bruce Campbell at some point, whilst Michael Baldwin has a good chance at making a cameo.

He also confirmed that this is a relaunch rather then a remake. Bannister saidin the beginning it will be similar to the original "Phantasm" but halfway through just goes off into a completely different direction. Finally, Bloody Digusting reports that New Line has also acquired the original "Phantasm: theme music and will look to give it an orchestral treatment. As expected, the spheres will be receiving a major upgrade.

    Travolta Is A Real Bastard
    Source: DarkHorizons

Rope of Silicon reports that in exchange for New Line getting Tarantino to do their "Ultimate Jason Voorhees Movie", they will help him get his other films off the ground starting with "Inglorious Bastards". Rumor has it that Tarantino will be given free reign to do as he pleases on the film, in addition, they're allowing him to play a major acting role in the film.

Tarantino is also apparently eyeing John Travolta for the part. What Travolta would even play in Inglorious is up in the air as Tarantino hasn't let anyone know much more than the film is set in World War II, and revolves around a group of soldiers on their way to be executed, only they get the chance for a reprieve. Tarantino describes them as "Not your normal hero types that are thrown into a big deal in World War II."
