Default Venn Diagram - Van Halen and New Order

So I'm chatting with a coworker about the CD's I am listening to, and discussing our musical tastes. He tells me he listens to a lot of British pop music such as New Order. I have an adverse reaction to that statement, and he proceeds to inform me that a Venn diagram containing Van Halen and New Order would have considerable overlap. Both popular '80s bands, he says.

I didn't know any New Order songs so I hit Amazon for a sample, and my god, could he have been any more wrong? There is zero in common between one of the top two or three rock bands of the '70s, '80s and '90s, and this batch of whiny Euro-pop one-hit wonders.

Its amazing what people will tell you. He then proceeded to tell me that he liked Van Halen and that one of his favorite albums was "50-51". I asked him what he thought of Van Halen I, and he responded, "as opposed to Van Halen II, III, and IV?"

I guess it takes all kinds.

New Order? New Order fucking rocks dude- don't be too hard on em. I've seen em live and they put on a really good show- believe it or not, they actually play instuments as opposed to programming all their stuff.

ok, I will check them out more than the sample I heard on Amazon.

The real reason I started the thread was to use the term Venn Diagram in this forum.

I went and listened a bit more, and the jury is still out. I do recognize some of their other songs, I just didn't know who it was. But really, though - can anyone tell me what Van Halen and New Order have in common? My coworker's point was that they were very similar, which is why he said their circles in a Venn Diagram would significantly overlap.

He also told me that Ted Nugent was the "Detroit City Rocker". Close, but no cigar...

He probably thinks that Pink Floyd guy is really cool too. People might as well just admit it when they don't know something. I think you seem a little smarter not talking about what you don't know instead of pretending you do.

New Order is one the best bands of the 80's...They fucking rock..I saw them live here in Dallas back in 89..If you weren't listening to them then it'll probably be hard to get into their stuff now

That actually made me laugh out loud!

But anyway, New Order is great! I was also a big fan of DepecheMode back in the day. Totally different genre from VH, of course, and there is no overlap on any Venn Diagram.
