    Default Official Roxette Thread

Let me start with, if I had to name two bands that had a major influence in my life, I would pick Van Halen as a first, and Roxette as a second close. It's may seem funny at the first sight, but here is the story.

I've first hear Roxette by an accident, when I went to my friend with a HDD and he happened to have their Best Of on his, so, since I haven't heard of them I became curious and copy/pasted it. There were about 10-12 songs and they were amazing, but I though that was it, since it was a pop/rock, plus what applies to many bands - all great stuff could fit on a single CD, and you wouldn't find anything out of ordinary if you get a full discography. Well like Bon Jovi - I had best of with 20 songs for ages, finally I've got all of his CDs and they all were like, those tunes from Best Of plus fillers. I didn't expect anything else from Roxette when got their complete package, it turned out I was wrong.

I listen to many types of music, from Tchaikovsky and Strauss to Glenn Miller to Elvis to Armstrong to every major rock/metal band since 70s to date, I have a versatile taste in music and I'm sure many of you would admit I have a good one (ok let's close eyes on VH3 stuff, apart from that there is nothing I could be flamed for ). With that said, I haven't heard any musician or group of musicians to come up with so many diverse and great melodies in their genre than Roxette, and I really mean that - not a single. That doesn't mean their stuff come close to Van Halen or Zeps, of course not, since after all Roxette is a light rock band. But the point is, if you had to pick best songs from Van Halen, all eras, I mean not personal preferencies like Little Guitars or Romeo Delight, but all-time favourite recognizable tunes, like ATBL and Unchained, they would fit on a single CD (actually that would be BOTW minus 3 new singles - 3 live version - FWYS-like stuff). With Roxette, it would be more easier for me to leave 3-5 tunes and pick the whole discography. That's the magic of this band - there are no fillers at all, every song is great and unique, and every album is solid from opening to closing tune. There is everything on them - A-tempo like The Look, Epic like Listen To Your Heart, kick-ass rock like Dressed For Success, power-ballads like Chances, brilliant tunes like Paint and Dangerous - and I've only listed songs from one album!

What even more outstanding about the band, are their lead singers, Marie and Per. They had such chemestry between them which gave a birth to those songs, and their voices are more than just amazing. Plus, what is more important - Roxette was an outstanding live act, they had the best basist and guitarist in Sweden and it always amazed me how they managed to re-arrange their songs while playing on stage. Actually, if in studio their songs were done to be more radio friendly, live they became a real rock band!

Plus, they have never lowered the position they've once hit. They've sold 45 million records worldwide, with Look Sharp going 8x multiplatinum, Tourism and Have a Nice day going 6x and Joyride hitting the Diamond Status, and taking in account for some weird and strange reason they never got any big record deal with American labels (when their sales in Europe went huge). And with all this said, they are a band from some Sweden. I can't imagine what would they've been had they been originally from UK or the US.

Well anyway, I hope it was a good read guys, I just wanted to share with you what I feel towards them. I've waited for this thread till I've finally finished my Roxette-dedicated web-site and launched the board there (which could be found here http://www.freepgs.com/mishar/phpBB2/main.php, or in the bottom line of my sig), so if you happen to like this band - you are very much welcomed there !!!

If I wanted to start a thread on Quiet Riot album, I'd have done it right here as well

Jesus, Quiet Riot??? Dokken? Somebody please send this kid a box full of 8 track Skynyrd, Credence, and old school AC DC before he succumbs fully to the Dark Side.

And, uh, maybe I'm an old timer, but I've never even HEARD of Roxette.

I saw Roxette on their Joyride tour in Toronto, yep got to meet them and everything (please no comments) I must say the girl is good looking until she opens her mouth (yeah, those teeth) and the guy, pretty talented as he played alot of the instuments, but he sounds dumb as a stump, all in all they had a good sound for when they were out, as far as the show went, they are a listening band not a visual, they sounded excellent live as they had a full band out with them, but a live show that has less motion then drying concrete, still not shamed to admit I have their greatest hits, it's not a bad CD.

So, if I haven't listed Ed King or Angus Young in my top-25 guitarists that means I don't listen to Lynyrd or AC/DC ?

Why don't you go to that thread and do something useful ?

I think "The Look" is one of the coolest songs, if not the coolest song from the 80's. It just has a very cool vibe to it, and her voice is amazing. I crank it up every time it comes on the radio. I give it two thumbs up!
