Your Top-25 Guitarists Of All Times

I know I'll never give this topic a rest. This should be done sticky at some point.

OK, there were Top-10s and such before, but I call everybody to challenge me with quater of hundret of guitar players (especially those who flame me for having 'soft' preferences in music, Squal and LowLife, you hear me ? ). Plus, try not just to list the names, but to give a short explaination why this certain dude deserves his place in your Hall of Fame.

    So here we go:

    1. Eddie Van Halen - musically, the major influence in my life, and the first musician who made me listen to albums because of a guitarwork. One of the greatest player technically in the history of guitarplaying to date, and the top one in my book by feelings' expression through the axe

    2. Zakk Fucking Wylde - in my opinion, the second person after Eddie to come with absolutely independent style and tone, and one of the most versatile player ever. What amazed me most, he can write ultra-heavy pentatonic riffs, and then come up with Rock, Country, Blues - whatever, or stuff like 'Fading' or 'Throwin It All Away' - one of the most beautiful solos I've ever heard. If he keeps it this way - in 10 years he'll be an icon Eddie is now. At least I hope so

    3. Randy Rhoads - for me watching him playing is something unbelievable, something I feel watching EVH only - like the person was born for the guitar, or he and the axe is the solid being, so overwhelming is his music and technique.

    4. Carlos Cavazo - I think he doesn't get the credit he deserves because of Randy once being in Quiet Riot, but this guy is amazing. Love his riffs and tone

    5. Neil Schon - very interesting and not ordinary technique, with one of my favourites guitar tones. His job in HSAS is outstanding, especially on the live version, and I'm found of his recent Soul Sirkus project.

    6. Reb Beach - I first heard him on Don Dokken's 'Up From The Ashes' and in a few weeks got his solo album 'Masquerade' which I liked as well.

    7. Dimebag Darrel - I admit I'm not a big fan of Pantera's music, but Dime is the major reason why I listen to it. Maybe on some tunes he's repetative in main riffs, but when he gets into a solo all his talent is instantly heard, plus he's written very beautiful music for tunes like in Cemetary Gates or Floods, which says much for a heavy-metal band.

    8. George Lynch - another outstanding Dokken guitarist (or should I say the first and the only ?), great technique and fast fingers

    9. Dave Hill - unfortunately, Slade is not very well known in America, not to mention many don't know 'Cum on Feel the Noise' and 'Mama We're All Crazy Now' on Quiet Riot albums are in reality Slade covers. Dave is my most favourite guitar player from that era, because he was the first one to come with such a powerful sound of his! It's unbelievable what he's been doing with his stone-age amps and cubs, he made his axe sound like an armoured vehicles' factory on a heavy duty!

    10. Jonas Isaksson - guitar player of a band I'll start a sepparate thread on later tonight. He's not a shredder at all, but he's an awesome rythm guitarist, and being sincere I'd say tone-wise, when he starts playing solos, I really couldn't choose between him and Ed.

    11. Steve Vai - I was very much biased against him before, since I've heard many talks about him blowing EVH miles away and such, but once I've listened to EEAS I've totally changed my mind. I won't say anything new everybody wouldn't know, just add that the dude is hell of a talent

    12. Tony Iommi - by inventing Heavy Metal, this one should be a must in everyone's top-list

    13. Ritchie Sambora - if he would have gone with more high gain (and not such p#%sy) tone, I'd have put him in top-5! A clear example how poppy sound could ruin great technique, but Richie is very (and I mean VERY) skillful guitarist and I like Bon Jovi as a band, so here he is, number 13

    14. Dave Sabo - the lead guy from Skid Row, IMO very much underrated. If Skidz wouldn't have breaked up with Baz after a 3rd album, maybe he would have got his credit. But anyway, for their style he was just perfect, plus a great improvisor (intro to Monkey Buisiness live eg)

    15. Michael Schenker - not a big fan of Scorps, but I like his job in MSG

    16. Brian May - nothing to comment here, I know his technique is far from perfect but Queen is Queen, and May always had his own trademarked tone

    17. David Gilmour - another legend, should I comment on him

    18. Jimmy Page - now this could come as a sacrilege for some (if not for most), to rate Page below Schon or Sambora, but that's my personal preferences. I know that by the importance to Rock music he should be in Top-3 or around.

    19. Joe Perry - although having Perry and EVH in one list is kinda ego-unapropriate, Joe is an amazing guitarist nevertheless.

    20. Ritchie Blackmore - I don't like him as an improvisor, actually I don't listen to Deep Purple at all now, but some of his stuff is very nice. Just because I liked DP as a kid.

    21. Nuno Bettencourt - this has nothing to do with my VHIII preferences . The guy is really amazing in my book

    22. Slash - uh, I always have quarrels with my mate about who's better EVH or Slash so I'll skip this one

    23. Ronnie Montrose - another underrated player, although I don't know if I'd have listed him haven't Sammy be on Montrose album [/sarcasm]

    24. Dave Mustaine - Pantera-like situation - not too much into Megadeth, but guitarsmanship is outstanding

    And finally,

    25. Brett Norton - if anybody would dare to say 'Your list sucks' . But really, from what I've heard so far Brett is a bad ass guitarist with crazy fingers, anyway I've hesitated whom to place as 25th, him or Hendrix and here is the result

I don't know anything about technique or style or anything - just know what I like once it hits my ears. So my list isn't going to be a bunch of pyrotechnical guitar wizards, just guys I like to hear play. Unfortunately, guys from bands with more than one guitarist get short shrift as I don't know who plays what!

    Lindsey Buckingham
    James Burton
    Mike Campbell
    Ace Frehley
    Glenn Frey
    The Edge
    Peter Frampton
    J. Geils
    Billy Gibbons

    25. Jimi Hendrix--had to throw him in, the grandfather of rock guitar"

Do you mean the grandfather of rock? Sorry, that's Chuck Berry
my friend. I mean, I can't do this list because there is alot of
guitarist that I haven't heard and alot of rock I haven't heard...
but it's a shame that only one person has Chuck Berry listed.

Honestly, I enjoy Chuck Berry a great deal more than I do
    Jimi Hendrix.

I guess I'll do my top favorite then

    1.Eddie Van Halen of course
    2.Chuck Berry
    3.Randy Rhodes-Ozzy, Quiet Roit
    4.Jimi Hendrix-The Jimi Experience
    5.Stevie Ray Vaughan-And Double Trouble
    6.Slash-Guns N Roses, Velvet Revolver
