    Aerosmith Tour Rumor Again

    Summer promises many concert highlights
By Steve Morse, Globe Staff | March 11, 2005

The scramble to book summer concerts is on.

Major acts such as Paul McCartney and the Rolling Stones aren't expected until the fall, but the coming months will be flush with tours by Toby Keith, Tim McGraw, Destiny's Child, String Cheese Incident, and classic-rock packages of Boston and Styx, Robert Plant and Jeff Beck, and perhaps Aerosmith and Van Halen, according to various promoters and agents.

Many tours will land at the Tweeter Center, where Oasis and Jet are confirmed for a 20th anniversary show on June 24 (already on sale). Fans can also look to the Tweeter for Green Day, the Dave Matthews Band, and Ozzfest, along with a possible date by Josh Groban and maybe a Kenny Chesney/Gretchen Wilson double bill or an Alan Jackson/Sara Evans pairing.

Yet another classic-rock tour -- featuring Bryan Adams and Def Leppard -- will play Brockton's minor-league ballpark, Campanelli Stadium, where Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson headlined last year.

The punk-oriented Vans Warped Tour will move from the Gillette Stadium parking lot to the Northampton Fairgrounds (look for an Aug. 15 date to be posted Monday on the Vans Warped website). The change is because promoter John Peters of MassConcerts was frustrated last year with his treatment by the Foxborough board of selectmen, which he says held up the show until the last minute. Gillette officials also wanted to bring it inside the stadium rather than have it in the parking lot, but Vans Warped organizers said no.

''We're going back to a place where people want it," Peters says.

Also, the WBCN River Rave, which is normally held at the Tweeter Center in June, may be pushed back or may not happen at all this summer.

''If I can't offer something that is worth the money to plunk down, then I'm not going to do it at all," says WBCN program director Dave Wellington. ''Each year it gets tougher. . . . Many groups don't like doing radio station shows because there are a lot of poorly run shows around the country and they've gotten a bad rap."

The big buzz is about a stadium show featuring Eminem, 50 Cent, and Linkin Park, but no one is yet confirming if it will come to Gillette Stadium.

Other acts expected to book Boston-area dates are Coldplay, Velvet Revolver (who plays the Mullins Center in Amherst May 3), Tool, Staind, Brian Wilson (whose website posts an Aug. 9 date at Bank of America Pavilion, formerly FleetBoston Pavilion), and another ''American Idol" tour (likely at the DCU Center in Worcester). Also of interest is a possible Audioslave/System of a Down pairing, though that's not likely until the fall.

    Plant and Beck. That's cool.

Boston and Styx? Hmm. But Brad doesn't sing for Boston anymore. So it's not really Boston, is it?

Aero Halen. I'm down. Especially if Joe and Ed do some dueling banjo action.

You know I was so fixated on the Aero-VH thing, I missed the Plant-Beck tour. Also, I wouldn't mind seeing Oasis with Jet at all.

Being that Aerosmith is a "Boston" band, me thinks there could be some legitimacy to this...(FYI- "THe Globe" is The Boston Globe...)

I love Van Halen, and I love Aerosmith, but I don't want to see them both together. If it's going to mean shorter set lists for each band, you can keep it.......oh, fuck, of course I'm still going to go though.
Plant and Beck sounds cool. Anyone ever see Jeff Beck before? Unbelievable!!

If I had my choice, VH would headline a tour by themselves, but if they're with Aerosmith I'll still go. I'll take VH live any way I can get it.

Actually, I'll settle for it simply being discussed, because that means the boys are still together

    Ditto.
Sammy did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.

I'll stick around for Aerosmith only if:

    1. They play classic stuff, not 90 minutes of ballads, and;

    2. Alicia Silverstone and Liv Tyler reprise their roles in the Crazy video and act like Victoria's Secret models for all to see...

I don't think I'm asking for too much!!!
    Nothing to see here.

We all know that Aeroshit will play very little of the classic stuff and way too many of the ballads and Desmond Child written pop songs. And as far as Liv Tyler and Alicia, not sure if I would want to see them in next to nothing anymore since they have both packed on a shitload of weight.

It's funny to read the criticism that Aerosmith ONLY plays the newer stuff or ALL ballads. I've been to a lot of Aerosmith shows, and they have NEVER played even HALF, let alone ALL ballads.....

Considering the amount of material they have, they try to balance the old and new (otherwise everyone would bitch they play the same setlist all the time...sounds like a complaint about another band I know ) It's only 90 to 120 minute show, they can only play so much....plus, they have the staples that they pretty much HAVE to play each night from all eras; Walk this way, Dude looks like a lady, etc....

Here are soime setlists over the last few tours, looks balanced enough to me. not to mention they change it up occasionally by playing more classic stuff like Lord of the Thighs or Nobody's Fault in between the staples:

The bottom line is Aerosmith, without changing the lead singer, is 2 different bands...Done With Mirrors was the last Aerosmith cd. After that, they brought in the outside song writers (like Bon Jovi, Kiss, Heart, etc.) and they turned into Aeroshit. I loved Aerosmith, but cannot stand Aeroshit.
