Default What Would You Recommend? Killer New Bands That No One Has Heard Of

    Greetings All,

Since a lot of killer bands don't get noticed today, what would you recommend in the classic rock/hard rock (or blues based) style. Great guitars with killer riffs and equally great vocals. Something in the vein of:

    The Black Crowes
    Silvertide
    The Screaming Cheetah Wheelies
    Gov't Mule
    Jet
    Big Sugar
    Big Wreck
    Cry of Love

70's influenced, but with a modern edge. Let me know of all these great bands that no one has heard of (or hardly knows). Can be solo artists as well like that Jonah dude that opened for Van Halen or Richie Kotzen.

    Thank you very much

I noticed you included Gov't Mule in your initial post. While many of you fellow linkers probably have noticed that I mention them a great deal, trust me, it's no bullshit. Old and new Mule (they've been around for about 10 years now) just simply kicks ass! Check out their current tour or any of their CD's, bootlegs, or live recordings available at their website. They've now added an additional permanent member on keyboards and it's really rounded out their sound and expanded the songwriting possibilities. In their early days, and up until recently, they were essentially a three piece. On top of being a great band, they're really appreciative of their fans, allow recording at their live shows, and try and make their shows affordable to attend. All the members are involved in outside projects, in particular Warren Haynes ( Allman Brothers, The Dead, Phil Lesh, solo stuff, etc.). As a result, it's really made the members better musicians and the band as a whole that much better. Honestly, if you're looking for a great band to get you through the "dark days" here in the world of VH, check out G'Mule.

I bought dmb's The Central Park Concert on dvd last week. Warren Haynes came on stage for a couple of songs. He sang Cortez, the Killer. It was really good, I like his voice. I wouldn't mind hearing more from him. I'll have to check out that website.

    Hey man,

    you should check out:

GRADY - Gordie Johnsons (aka- Big Sugar) new band. He's hooked up with Chris layton (Double trouble--Stevie Ray Vaughn) and some redneck looking dude on bass. I actually just saw them last night. Wicked show, I was right in front, no one was between me and the band, it was great. If you like Big Sugar your gonna like Grady.

THORNLEY - If you like Big Wreck(Ian Thornley) you're gonna dig Thornley. Same melodic song writing with heavier riffs. Ian Kicks ass!!!! If you get a chance to see them, they play some big wreck stuff live. Inhale, and That Song were great live.

    Grady
I saw these guys open for the Arc Angels a few weeks ago and they were insane. The only way I describe them is "hillbilly metal."

    Podunk
I saw them open for Tesla several years ago. Good bluesy Texas rock band.

Hey, Kasi, glad to hear you've heard a little of Warren's singing abilities. He's an even better guitar player and songwriter. What I find amazing about him, is that he can sing soulful bluesy stuff one minute, and then kick your ass with a gritty rock tune the next. He may very well be the hardest working man in showbiz, as he's always either touring with the the Allmans (they began their annual run at the Beacon Theatre in NYC last night, by the way), touring with Gov't Mule, performing solo, or working with The Dead and Phil Lesh. In fact, on Sirius music the other night I heard a tune which featured he and Matt Apts (also of Gov't Mule) on the first solo album from the dude from Jefferson Airplane, Jack Cassidy. He's in very big demand by nearly everyone who's anyone in the jam band world. I think he's one of the most talented musicians to come around in the past 25 years. Here's some suggestions regarding some 'Mule to ckeck out: The album "Government Mule," Dose, Life Before Insanity, Deep End Volumes one and Two ( shitloads of guest musicians, mostly Bass players such as John Entwistle, Flea, the dude from DMB, Mike Gordon, JAck Cassidy, Chris Squire from Yes, many more), and also their new studio album, "Deja Vodoo." There's also tons of bootlegs floating around from the many shows they've played over the years. Anyway, I hope you check them out, I think you'll enjoy them.

These guys aren't new, and have actually broken up, but they've released two great albums. Heavily influenced by Alice In Chains and STP, these guys put out two pretty solid rock albums. They had a song called Into The Light that got played alot on VH1 back in 2000, but they just faded away. The band's name is Dust For Life. I've go some rare tracks, and unplugged stuff posted over at www.guitars101.com

You can also check them out here:
