    Default Tone !!!

    Hey guys ,

I just spent the last 2 months really getting into VH, VHII,Women and Children First, and Fair warning.

Getting the sounds and really learning tte stuff, but now I decided to listen to some Sammy Era stuff and I pulled out my Right Here Right Now CD and Ed's tone was totally different. It seemed to have a LOT more bass in it and his solos, well I just can't describe it, but it is almost like he played everything on a neck pickup.

But it was wailin too! IF that is a neck pup he used, what was it?

Remember one thing when "trying" to replicate Ed's tone... 1st you gotta have his hands, 2nd and most importantly You can have the same model guitar, strings, pick, cord, amp, pedals and still not nail it... You'd also have to reproduce the studio acoustics, relative humidity, sonic range of a pair of 1989 Levi 501's with one button missing, micing, EQ'ing and whatever amount of foreign matter was encrusted on the mixing panel and tape heads when Ed recorded it. In simple terms you can get close but never hit the nail on the head because you can't recreate all the variables that went into a single moment captured on tape through specific recording gear and the same engineer twisting the knobs...

If EVH was smart in the PR department, he could gain more favor if he held a contest and the winner got to go to 5150 and play through his whole rig (inc. the Magic Marshall & guitars).

I kinda gave the wrong immpresion in my post, I'm not trying to nail Ed's tone, I just love the smoothness of his solos from that album and would like to get close to that. I actaully don't like the Rytym tone, it's to bassy for me.

thats the neck pick up of the ebmm. the closest thing to it is the dimarzio air norton. he uses the wah wah pedal on quiet a bit of the solos as well.

EVH used a BOSS OC-1 or 2 octaver as well as the neck pickup for F.U.C.K.
Homer: No one snuggles with Max Power. Just strap on and feel the Gs!

American Coast Guard: Back off Canadians we got them.
Canadian Coast Guard: You back off hosers, they are in Canadian waters, eh.

Canadian Coast Guard: Take a hike you Shatner stealing Mexico touchers!

Bart: Who the hell is this?
Jack Bauer: I’m Jack Bauer, who the hell is this?
Bart: Me, er… I’m Ahmed Adudi
Jack: Chloe, get me all you can on Ahmed Adudi… Does anyone there know Ahmed Adudi?
Chloe O’Brien: Ahmed Adudi; wealthy Saudi financier… Disappeared into Afghanistan in the late 90s…
    Jack: … Really?
Chloe (ironically): No Jack it’s a joke name, you’re being set up.
    Jack: DAMMIT!

I have an Air Norton in my soloist, but it doesn't have the balls that Ed's sound has. Could be that I like the solo tone of hte 5150, just not the rytym.

My Brother had a 5150 and it was just total noise, WAY too much gain, for me. Are Ed's identical to the production ones?

    We'll never know for sure.

I've heard on the last tour that his "main" rig used EL-34 tubes, and that his cabinets have actually always been loaded w/ Celestions anyway, so who knows.

If the amount of gain was the problem, then no, you're not going to like the amp. Did you try the rythm channel? I used to use that instead of the Lead.

I never really spent a lot of time with it, I jsut remember that when we played together that my MArshall was a lot closer to the VH sound than his 5150 was, BUT my amp was closer to his earlier sound and I wasn't too familiar with his sound past 1984.

youre not going to get much quietness out of the 5150 without upping the post gain and using a noise gate. i use a boss ns-2 . even so you ll still get a little hiss but it is a high gain amp.
