    Default Pedal Question

I got an MXR Flanger and to make a long story short, the sound is starting to cut out when hitting the switch, both when it's on and when it is off.

When you touch the swithc the sound will come back in and out. Could this be anything other than a bad switch?

Also, Could a bad switch or connection to the switch add some distortion to the signal?

I dont own an MXR Flanger..man your lucky

but I do have an MXR Phase 90...Ive noticed that the Phase 90 actually adds a little bit of grit to the sound while it does its phasing thing.

Im not sure if the Flanger does the same. If its cutting in and out...it could be as simple as a bad battery. A bad battery will tend to lead to a distorting sound sometimes..if you kick the switch and it comes back on and off then its a connection problem in the pedal I imagine you could take it to a repair shop and they could fix it..wish I could help more..good luck

The MXR flanger doesn't take a battery ,so I know that's not the problem.

My phase 90 added a lot of grit in the loop, so I had to run it in front of the amp and it was really smooth.

But then I got An EVH phase 90 and it doesn't add any grit, just a smooth phasing sound.

I hope that it is just the switch, I paid a fortune for it

Get some electronic contact cleaner at your local radio shack... clean your input and output jacks as well as your switch. Odds are it's your plug jacks and the slight movement of your pushing the button is causing the problem... If that doesn't fix it you probably have a component failure but I'd bet a buck it's dirty jacks or switch...

ihope it is n't a compnet failure, since it only happens when the switch is touched someho, So I'm hoping your right and it's just a dirty or bad switch.

I actually just had it cleaned out and a new power cord put on it, but my tech din't have any switches at the time, it looks like new inside and pots are real smooth too.

Oh and would a bad or dirty switch casue some distortion in the sound? At times it seems like the flange is overdriven, but not in a good way

Yes, if a switch was bad, or intermittent it can cause sound problems. The best way to tell is to just jumper the switch connection with alligator leads, but if you're not sure about that see if you can find a true bypass switch to replace it with. They're not expensive or hard to install if you've ever used a soldering iron in the past.
