Default Mt St Helen's Erupting Small Clouds, Lava Flows

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7132927/

    2005
VANCOUVER, Wash. - The crater of Mount St. Helens spewed a large plume of steam and ash beginning at 5:25 p.m. PT on Tuesday, with the cloud reaching up to 36,000 feet in altitude, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

KING-TV in Seattle said the plume was preceded by an earthquake of about 2.0 magnitude.
The station's meteorologist Jeff Renner reported that wind patterns were forecast to take the ash to the east over the Cascade Range, not over population centers.
The University of Washington said the event knocked out some of its instruments in the crater, but there was no indication that it caused damage outside the crater.
The volcano in southwest Washington rumbled to life again last fall, pumping out lava as the mountain nears the 25th anniversary of the devastating eruption of May 18, 1980, that killed 57 people.
This latest volcanic burp from the mountain comes just after the state Board on Geographic Names unanimously chose Tulutson, the Cowlitz Indian word for ice, as the name for the glacier that has grown inside the mountain’s crater.
Cameras on a helicopter from KING TV in Seattle showed glowing lava inside the crater.
There was so far no change in alert status. Air travel in the Portland, Ore., area remained normal.

Yeah, it's been on the news. Someone called us at work to let us know it was going and we turned it on to see what was up. I'm only about an hour or so away but we aren't too worried here. The wind very rarely heads towards Olympia from St Helens. Even though there is the slightest chance of high devastation at any given time, it's still kinda cool having active volcanoes not too far away. That part of nature has always intrigued me. The one we mostly worry about in the Pacific Northwest is Mt Rainier. If that one goes off like St Helens did in 1980, we would be pretty fucked!

Wow & too cool! I was just hiking on St. Helens in December and felt movement. I also remember the eruptions in 1980. The first blast dusted my campsite with about 2-3 inches of ash! St. Helens is a magnificant site and nature has partially restored her profile. She will blow again in the near future and I believe most precautions have been alerted to all residents. However, Mt. Rainier is the big issue as far as volcanos. That is a beauty just on the verge of popping. My brother lived on the NW face of Rainier, and they have evacuation drills every 3 months!
    Let nature take its course.

Hey, TopTimi, miss the Taco Bus yet??? He moved to the bottom of Nisqually hill about 3 or 4 miles away in case you're here again. The bus has been closed for about two weeks for his move and I've been totally jonesing for some tacos bad!!! Sorry I never responded about getting together. My schedule was pretty fucked back in that time as well as getting cellulitis in my foot which sidelined me for a while. I'm lucky to have my leg and my life for that matter. It was pretty bad.

Anyways, my exgirlfriend's parents live right outside of the Mt Rainier park in the Elbe/Ashford area and their house is about a 1/4 to a 1/3 of a mile from the Nisqually River. They are totally fucked if Rainier erupts.

That's pretty scary, dude. I am glad I'm not in your neck of the woods. Look at all the other towns that would be screwed as well. I think I would be on the safer side because where I'm at in Lacey to be technically correct is high enough to not have mudflow damage. There would be no way to go from Oly to Seattle because that whole area would be devastated. Gosh, I hope we never have to see this in our lifetimes or generations to come.

For some reason, I don't like or want to even look at toast anymore...

    Just kidding!

Anyways, SEA, the chances of a major eruption without any warning like earthquakes for days or weeks prior, is very, very slim. It could happen, but I wouldn't bank on it. As far as where OLO lives, if there was earthquakes and signs of a possible blast, I'd be soooo out of there, soooo quickly.

Here's some info if you are really interested or anyone else here, for that matter:

    Mt Rainier Info

    Mt Rainier Info II

The other things one can do as well is google "lahar" or "mt rainier lahar".

As you can see, I'm kinda into these things in our backyards...

The destructive power of nature amazes me. Hopefully nothing too serious will happen with St Helens.

When one of my bro's lived out in Prosser, WA we would regularly visit Rainier because the scenery is sooooooo breath-taking. Great place to visit, but live there with the threat of a big eruption, no thanks. I'll take the East Coast hurricanes any day of the week.

Also visited St. Helen's when I was out there once 'bout 8 years ago. Pretty amazing to see the damage the eruption in '80 did to the surrounding landscape.

    Earthquake Swarm Off Oregon Coast
    07-Mar-2005

A swarm that has now reached over 3,500 small earthquakes began last weekend off the Oregon coast, but officials insist that they do not pose any tsunami threat, even though part of the affected ocean floor is similar to the area in the Indian Ocean area that produced the magnitude 9 quake that caused last December's huge tsunami in southeast Asia. The small quakes off the Oregon coast range from a magnitude of 2 to 4.

NOAA scientists think the quakes are caused by an underwater volcano which is about to erupt. A NOAA team plans to dive down to investigate and snap photos of the lava welling up from the seafloor, where the Juan de Fuca plate is located. This has been called a "tectonic time bomb," because it is capable of producing earthquakes and tsunamis that could equal the disaster in Indonesia, although scientists don't expect that to happen as a result of these small quakes.
