    Default Eddie's background vocals

I was watching the Balance PPV and was thinking, "Is it just me, or does Eddie not sing as many background vocals as he used to?"
For example, in "Can't Stop Loving You," Michael seems to be the only one singing the bgv, and there is a doubling effect on his voice.
I think Van Halen's most underrated strong point is its background vocals. I'd like to see Eddie sing as much as he used to. I can't really recall whether or not he sang a lot of bgv on the latest tour. Did he?

Hey sang too much backup on the latest tour. His vocal chords are really damaged from the cigs and booze. He doesn't even have a voice when he sings (or screams) "Best of Both Worlds." I love his backing vocals on songs like "Jamie's Cryin'" and "Feel Your Love Tonight" when they did them live. He could hold pitch well back then. I just think his voice is too damaged now.

I saw him spend some measurable time at the mic here in Anaheim, and he sang a verse of WCTBL by himself again like he did on the Balance tour.

His voice was awful. Good thing they didn't kick mikey out.
You know the best tone I ever had was with that little bandmaster cranked to 10. Edward Van Halen, 1980, Guitar Player Magazine.

I didn't think he was bad at all on this last tour. Not what he used to be, but good enough.
Sammy did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.
Michael did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.

His voice was never the greatest but it seems worse the older he gets. Granted, the cancer, cigarettes and booze has a LOT to do with it.

I think that Eddie can still sing but it is more rough. He did a good job on Unchained and Top of the World.

As much as people slob on Mikey's knob for his important background vocals, Eddie does a pretty good job as well. It takes two to do a harmony and rarely do Roth or Hagar sing backups live. If Eddie is off, then Mikey will sound like shit.

During the VH3 tour he still could do Dance the Night Away and Feel your Love.

Wow Is started a thread on this long ago. I agree with the getting bad. For example, on Finish What Ya Started, Jamie's Cryin', and even on Josephina(live and album) Ed rocks, but this year he was definitely not up to his usual standard. Then again there has been an album in a while so there really isn't a standard anymore. Not singing for 6 years, smoking, drinking and cancer have most definitely contributed to the problem. Oh well he plays the guitar so...

Eddie has great vocals. Both him and Mike had nice vocals on VHIII and live Mikey did most of the background singing, It makes me wonder sometimes why they don't just have Mike lead sing. For some reason Sam's vocals are starting to appeal to me more this tour. I don't know what it is it just seems to blend in a lot better on the new songs, except for IAT I felt he didn't sing that as well as he could have. At this point I don't think anyone will leave VH except for maybe Sam. I think if Sam leaves VH this time around, then VH is done. Dave has never been an option after the 80's his vocals left, and for some reason most people don't like Gary, and another lead singer will just make VH very looked down upon.

    LOL!!!

You can really hear Ed's voice at the end of Feel your Love Tonight..Where he's drawing out the word Tonight..

Back in the 80's, people used to say that "Eddie has a crisp and clear studio voice" when they were just talking to him! It's so obvious that smoking, drinking, fighting cancer, and having a piece of his tongue removed, all damaged and changed his voice. I don't think that he has the chops that he used to. Not even close. It's ok, we have MIKEY!!!
