    Default Garage Band?

Have any of you guys used this? I dont have band, but I got some songs, can I use this to record my guitar playing and then add other instruments to make music? Can I also record a guitar lick, then use it as a sample to play over like, say, a techno beat? And finally, can I take any mp3 and take an instrument or part of the song and use that as a sample? Please shed some light on this Garage Band program...or are there any other programs that will let me do this such as pro tools? I jsut want to record and be able to sample things to make my own music.

BEFORE this turns into an 'Apple sucks' thread...

...I have Digital Performer 4.5, and although it is a more 'pro'-level application, GarageBand seems to be more compatible with my songwriting flow than anything else I've tried.

GarageBand has a HUGE collection of included loops for you to use right out of the box, and yes, you CAN bring in outside samples, but it's not very straightforward, and no, you cannot separate tracks/ instruments out of a prerecorded mp3. I don't know if an application exists that can do THAT.

I love GarageBand, and I love using it. It has a built-in simulated FM synthesizer, so you can create your own sounds (I have engineered sounds that are VERY close to the Jump and 1984 synthbrass sounds), and a very in-depth amp modeler (yes, you can come close to creating a Marshall/ Peavey sounds). Fortunately, for us Mac owners, GarageBand is a Mac-only application.

    Default apples

thanks for the reply. So you say I can bring in an outside sample, does this mean using my guitar or keyboard that I already have? And you say I cannot take out an instrument of an mp3 and use it as a sample, but can I use a portion of that mp3 in general as a sample? and can I simply jsut lay down a drum track and bass and then use my guitar to record a guitar track and same thing with the keyboard, then solo over the previously recorded track? sorry for all the questions just am real interested in starting to record and getting in to the whole home studio/music type thing. and do you happen to know how much space it takes up on my ibook? oh and what do you mean when you say its not very straightforward to bring in your own sample?

    Default Oh NO...

...it's VERY easy to get a guitar, keyboard, or vocal track laid down. VERY. What's not so easy is getting that prerecorded mp3 in there.

GarageBand and it's support files are NOT very small. 4GB seems to be sticking in my mind, but don't quote me on that.

    Default Cables/ JamPacks

Well, unless you have some sort of 1/4" input on your iBook, you'll need some sort of USB audio interface. I recommend checking into the ones sold by TASCAM or M-AUDIO.

I have JamPack 1, and it has a lot more instrument sounds and amp models that I don't think I could do without. Its nice, but not necessary.

So how wyould I go about putting my own bassline in...I dont have a bass. BUt I have a keyboard and guitar, so if i record those, can I only play them over a set bassline that comes with garageband or can I write my own bassline or drums instead of using the loops?

    Default Well...

...you can use the software instruments included to record your own bassline and drums, or, you can also use loops. GarageBand sounds like it might be exactly what you're looking for.

yeah i have a powerbook, so I have itunes and all that. I got my song in itunes then I tried to send it to my bro and it was 44 MB! So i bought quicktime pro off the apple website and then I converted the aiff file into an mp3 and its now only 4 MB so it all works out now. Garageband is terrific, its my dream. I dont even see a need to use my amp anymore bc I just plug into the computer and my guitar sounds great, plus i can record whatever I want. Anyone want a flextone?
