Stephen Rea Aboard V For Vendetta
    Source: ComingSoon!

Stephen Rea (Interview With the Vampire, The Crying Game) has joined Natalie Portman and James Purefoy in the action thriller V For Vendetta, which has launched production in Berlin, Germany.

Produced by Joel Silver, Andy Wachowski and Larry Wachowski, V For Vendetta is directed by James McTeigue, who served as the First Assistant Director on the Wachowski brothers' "Matrix" trilogy.

Set against the futuristic landscape of totalitarian Britain, V For Vendetta tells the story of a mild-mannered young woman named Evey (Portman) who is rescued from a life-and-death situation by a masked vigilante (Purefoy) known only as "V." Incomparably charismatic and ferociously skilled in the art of combat and deception, V ignites a revolution when he detonates two London landmarks and takes over the government-controlled airwaves, urging his fellow citizens to rise up against tyranny and oppression. As Evey uncovers the truth about V's mysterious background, she also discovers the truth about herself -- and emerges as his unlikely ally in the culmination of his plot to bring freedom and justice back to a society fraught with cruelty and corruption.

The screenplay by Andy Wachowski and Larry Wachowski is based on the acclaimed graphic novel "V For Vendetta" by Alan Moore ("The Watchmen," "From Hell") and illustrator David Lloyd. Originally published by DC Comics as a ten-part series in 1988, "V For Vendetta" has been praised for its vision, potency and eloquence. Moore is widely considered to be one of the finest comic writers of all time, and has been credited with single-handedly expanding the potential of the comic book medium with his work.

A UK-German co-production between Warner Bros. Productions Ltd. and Funfte Babelsberg Film GmbH, V For Vendetta will be filmed on location in Berlin and London. V For Vendetta is supported by the local subsidy fund Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg.

V For Vendetta will be released on November 4, 2005, by Warner Bros. Pictures.

You can now view pictures from Friday's start of principal photography, the full transcript, and bios on the stars and crew at the film's Official Website.

    "Pacifier" Sucks Up Big Bucks
    Source:E!Online

That sucking sound you hear is Chili Palmer being taken out by The Pacifier.

Confounding box-office prognisticators, Vin Diesel's family farce had a bigger than expected debut, grossing an estimated $30.2 million to easily outdistance the weekend's other top newcomer, John Travolta's Be Cool. The Get Shorty sequel racked up $23.5 million in second place, according to preliminary studio figures Sunday.

Both films overcame mediocre to poor reviews, bringing the two headliners some of their best opening weekends.

Diesel had better premiere numbers for his all-action flicks XXX and The Fast and the Furious, but in his first comedy, as a Navy SEAL turned nanny to bunch of bratty kids, the bald-pated big guy crushed his previous film, last year's sci-fi debacle The Chronicles of Riddick. That Universal release earned $24.2 million and went south fast; in contrast, his new PG-rated Disney film played well across several demos and averaged a solid $9,653 at 3,131 sites.

Travolta, reprising the role of mobster Chili Palmer ten years later, could have notched the biggest debut of his career if estimates hold, just surpassing the $23.2 million open for 1997's Face/Off, in which he costarred with Nicolas Cage. Be Cool easily beat the $12.7 million for Get Shorty, though the original opened in fewer theaters in 1995 with a slightly better per-screen average--$7,922--before going on to gross a successful $72.1 million. MGM's PG-13 Be Cool, costarring Uma Thurman, Vince Vaughn, Cedric the Entertainer and The Rock, strutted into 3,216 sites, where it averaged a slightly less than expected $7,307.

Meanwhile, the weekend's third entry, The Jacket, quickly proved out of fashion with just $2.6 million in 10th place. Warner Independent Pictures' artsy time-shifting thriller, headlined by Oscar winner Adrien Brody and British babe Keira Knightley, averaged just $2,002 at 1,331 cinemas.

Despite slipping to third this weekend, Will Smith's Hitch definitely has staying power. The romantic comedy was down just 39 percent with $12.5 million, bringing its four-week tally to $138.4 million.

Last week's unlikely number one movie, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, also held up fairly well. The Lions Gate comedy, which already has a sequel in the works, dipped 45 percent, earning $12 million in fourth place and has now grossed $38 million.

Two other films that opened weakly last weekend, Cursed and Man of the House, crapped out, falling 60 percent and 61 percent into the seventh and eighth slots, respectively.

Meanwhile, top Oscar winner Million Dollar Baby still packed some punch. After taking home Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor trophies, Clint Eastwood's boxing drama added 255 sites to play at 2,350, to score $8.5 million in fifth place, an uptick of 16 percent, to bring its 12-week purse to $76.9 million.

In very limited release, the winner was Gunner Palace, an R-rated Palm Pictures documentary about U.S. soldiers occupying one of the Hussein palaces in Iraq, with a per-screen average of $8,237 at eight sites for $65,898.

Miramax's PG-13 fractured-family love story Dear Frankie, at five sites, averaged $7,533 for $37,667; while the company's Italian import The Best of Youth, a drama about a lifetime journey of two brothers, debuted at just one site on Wednesday and earned $6,451.

Overall the top 12 films grossed $110.7 million, up 6 percent from last weekend, but down 16 percent from this time last year.

Final figures will be released Monday; meantime, this is how the top 10 lined up according to preliminary data compiled by Exhibitor Relations:

    1. The Pacifier, $30.2 million
    2. Be Cool, $23.5 million
    3. Hitch, $12.5 million
    4. Diary of a Mad Black Woman, $12 million
    5. Million Dollar Baby, $8.5 million
    6. Constantine, $6 million
    7. Cursed, $3.8 million
    8. Man of the House, $3.5 million
    9. Because of Winn-Dixie, $3.4 million
    10. The Jacket, $2.6 million

    Casting for Kolchak:The Night Stalker?
    Source: Moviehole

Having starred in nothing that has put bums on seats the last few years, English actor Stuart Townsend ["Queen of the Damned", "Trapped"] is changing course to the Idiot Box.

Townsend, best known to some as Mr Charlize Theron, looks set to play Carl Kolchak on the new reworked "Night Stalker" series over at ABC, says FilmForce.

Gabrielle Union ["Bring it On"] will play his partner in the pilot episode.

In the original series/movies Darren McGavin starred as a reporter who stumbled upon the weird, wacky and darn-right freaky week-in, week-out.

Exclusive: X3 Director Might Be Dead
    Plus, new Penn-manship for sequel.
    Source: IGNFF

March 04, 2005 - IGN FilmForce has learned that the shortlist of directors to succeed Bryan Singer as director of X-Men 3 has been narrowed to five or six names. One of those names, according to a trusty source, is Zack Snyder (Dawn of the Dead). We were advised, however, that just because Snyder is on the list doesn't mean he's got the job. 20th Century Fox is expected to make a final decision shortly.

In other news, screenwriter Zak Penn advised Sci Fi Wire that he has been brought in to work on the script for X3. IGN FilmForce has been able to confirm that Penn and the previously reported scribe Simon Kinberg are writing simultaneous drafts for X3. This is also what Fox did with Penn and Michael Dougherty & Dan Harris on X2: X-Men United.

Penn confirmed that the biggest challenge in scripting X3 is its large cast of characters. "It's not just about including everyone," said Penn. "It's really more about how you give everyone more and better screen time. ... The answer is that you can't, and you have to make really difficult choices."

"That's actually the most difficult thing about writing an X-Men movie. I think on X-Men 2, I counted 14 main characters, and I haven't even begun to count how many there are now. It's actually very difficult. It might not seem it, but it's a very difficult writing assignment in a lot of ways, because it's so complicated juggling all these different storylines. The movie is still coming together, but I believe that all the major players are back."

Marvel's Film Slate From 4th Quarter Report
    Source: SuperheroHype!

Marvel Enterprises, Inc. just held their 4th Quarter Earnings Conference Call and some interesting items were covered by Marvel Studios' Avi Arad. X-Men 3 is now scheduled for May 22nd, 2006 (that's a Monday and he mentioned Memorial Day which is the following Monday - perhaps he meant May 26 instead?). The movie was previously set for the first weekend in May. He added that the script for the third film is on par, if not better than the first two films and that Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart are back and that they're putting the video game into development early.

Arad said that you can expect the new Fantastic Four poster in 10 days. He also said the promotion for the film will be on par with the "Spider-Man" franchise and that the trailer will be seen with Fox films like "Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith" and "Kingdom of Heaven," and even Warner Bros.' Batman Begins.

While it was believed Ghost Rider would be an early 2006 release, Arad mentioned it will be a summer movie.

Here is the complete list of Marvel projects from the company's financial report:

Tarantino Boards New Friday the 13th Movie?
    Source: ComingSoon!

IGN Filmforce is reporting that "Kill Bill" helmer Quentin Tarantino is in talks to write and direct The Ultimate Jason Voorhees, a new "Friday the 13th" movie at New Line Cinema.

While Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash never came together, this new project will be a co-venture between New Line and Paramount Pictures. The site adds that the movie is on the fast-track and could get underway as early as this year.

A rep at William Morris Agency told the site that Tarantino has "not yet" been offered the job, however.

    Halle Berry on X-Men 3
    Source: SuperheroHype!

Halle Berry tells the New York Post's Page Six that she's in talks for X-Men 3 and hopes to get more action:

Berry is also up for a third "X-Men" movie, though she admits that she might change her mind if her character, Storm, doesn't get some better action.

"Storm has been a little shortchanged," Berry says. "If we go back and do one more, which we're all in talks of doing, it will be paramount that Storm rise up and be the true warrior and woman that she is in the comic book, which was why I got involved in the first place."

If all she wants is more action, she can just stop by bedroom and I will fulfill that request (of course it would have to be a nite when my wife is working late)

    BCI to Distribute He-Man Series
    Source: SuperheroHype!
Navarre Corporation, a leading publisher and distributor of a broad range of home entertainment and multimedia software products, today announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, BCI Eclipse Company, LLC ("BCI"), has acquired certain exclusive distribution rights to Entertainment Rights' classic animation series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and The New Adventures of He-Man.

Under the terms of this agreement, BCI will exclusively promote and distribute both classic animated series on DVD throughout the U.S. and Canada. The first release will be a "10 Best Episode" 2 DVD set from the original He-Man and the Masters of the Universe series which is scheduled to be launched at retail in July 2005 in conjunction with the 2005 San Diego Comic-Con International convention. This release will be followed later in the fall of 2005 with the first of multiple DVD box sets of the complete series in "season" format, plus comprehensive and generous special features.

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe is a landmark in children's television history, being the first nationally syndicated television program based on a successful toy line. Originally produced from 1983-1985 by world renowned Filmation studios and syndicated until 1990, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe has experienced consistent popularity over the years, demonstrated by its two subsequent animated series which aired in 1990 Ė 1991 and 2002 Ė 2004 as well as its multi-year run as an exceptionally successful toy and merchandising line for Mattel.

Greg Glass, Sr. VP at BCI, stated, "BCI is thrilled with the opportunity to bring these classic animated series to DVD for the first time in North America. Our acquisitions team has been focused on this property for quite some time based on its 25+ year history of being one of the strongest and most collectible toy and animation properties ever produced. BCI intends to give each DVD release the historical treatment it deserves."

Glass continued, "With He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, we build on our reputation for bringing classic and collectible programming to DVD, but we expand that focus to an even larger and more valuable licensed property. We are excited about this new added focus towards truly frontline collectible releases."

Mike Heap, CEO, Entertainment Rights, added, "We are extremely pleased to be partnering with BCI, who are recognized for their expertise in the marketing and distribution of home entertainment properties. He-Man is the second significant agreement Entertainment Rights has concluded since acquiring the Filmation library and we look forward to a rewarding partnership with BCI on He-Man and Masters of the Universe."

    Willis Must Walk 16 Blocks
    Source: DarkHorizons

Bruce Willis has chosen his next project, the simple concept thriller "16 Blocks" to be directed by Richard Donner for Millennium Films reports Variety.

Production is slated to begin this summer in New York on the project written by Richard Wenk, and concerns an aging cop who is forced to escort a high profile witness to the nearby courthouse sixteen blocks away. Catch is a lot of people are looking for this guy and more than happy to take both of them out on their brief walk.

This will be Donner's first pic since the 2003 adaptation of Michael Crichton's time-travel drama "Timeline." Willis' latest pic, "Hostage," opens Friday through Miramax Films.

McMahon On The Fantastic Four Sequel
    Source: DarkHorizons

Julian McMahon, who is playing Doctor Doom in the upcoming Fantastic Four movie, told Comics Continuum he is contracted for a sequel.

"I'm signed on to do the sequel, but I really have to be honest with you, the way that I would look at it if I was Fox and those guys, it depends on how well Von Doom is received and how well you could fit him back in again. It if works storyline-wise and if the audience liked him, I'd say they should bring him back. It would be a no-brainer. But if they feel like you kind of have done Von Doom and they need to bring in someone else, I can understand that as well. But we'll see."

VFX supervisor Kurt Williams talked about the electricity effects of the character: "When he fully escalates into full Doom, he has this power that he sort of controls the energy in the room and the electricity, so there's a lot of scenes where he drains the energy in the room and the lights come down. We're treating him with an electrical field. We'll generate some light sources that come from under his skin, that gives a topical electrical effect with him, it makes it organic, it's coming from inside him."
