I've never been able to get this song down right, especially the intro. I'm more laid back with his stuff; I can nail When It's Love, Dreams, most of the stuff from F.U.C.K.... all the stuff that doesn't require me to go crazy on my drums.

This drummer from Colorado, Tabert, used to play this with his band. They rocked. I'm not sure if he played the very intro or what, i forget, but he did the shuffle beat.

This one's definetely a boogie. Don't worry about copying the fills note for note as much as concentrating on keeping up the tempo. After the intro (tons of off beat triplets), I play the "shuffle" beat either with a single kick (d-d-ta, d-d-ta) or straight up double bass (d-d-d-d-d-d-d). Have fun with it.

The very beginning of that is a Simmons drum brain ( the part that sounds like a engine) don't try to learn that, your legs will fall off! The actual drums start where the cymbal crashes, and that ,my brotha, takes pratice, pratice, pratice.Good luck-have fun!

Actually, it is Al the whole way...He starts playing the pattern Danny Britt demonstrates on a simmons pad with an "effect" (this same pad can be heard in one of the last fills in Girl Gone Bad), then adds the double bass shuffle underneath that.

The sticking then follows with combinations of RRLR, played as triplets, the first three strokes on the simmons pad the last stoke on a roto tom. It then of course moves to the pattern on the bell of the ride, while the shuffle continues. I bought the transcription from some guy in Modern Drummer back in the late eighties. It is quite a challenge, but not impossible. He likely had the simmons pad and the rototom right next to each other. You can also hear the simmons pad and rototom on the fill after " I brought my pencil, give me something to right on .." Not sure why everyone including the people at Drum magazine, think he overdubbed that. Oh well, listen to the 1984 boots... he plays it except no rototoms, all simmons pads.

Pleasure Dome is tricky because you have to play a gallop type beat on the kicks while simultaneously doing the kick-ass tom fills.

It can be done on a floor tom. I believe it's a big floor tom, and so does a drum teacher I know. There's not much overdubbing involved. Most of it is one take, with just the extra tom hits (the jungle rhythm sounding ones) overdubbed, IIRC.

Oh, also... in his clinics, Mike Mangini plays HFT, except he does the intro with his FEET. So he's doing the motorbike sound with his feet and the kick part with his hands. I know a guy who was there and he said it was pretty amazing. HFT is pretty common at drum clinics. I know Gregg Bissonette does it, too.

Wow, you guys are helpful and knowledgeable. I believe it is a Simmons pad. Wow, I didnt know about the roto-tom, cause I dont remember hearing a high pitch sound, but I have to listen again now.

    Mangini is amazing!

No.. my friend! The technique is called amazing timing & filling the spaces with class & good imagination!!

Some people say is over-dubbing.... but simply IF YOU HEAR IT, its rudiments (ds rolls) on a Simmons pad, with accents on a ROTO-TOM with a shuffle bass drum figure!!

Usually, people tend to think is over-dubbed when they donīt figure it out!!

Alex, is the greatest... at least thatīs my opinion!!

Alex did an awesome job with this. It would be nice if he answered this himself.

Also, I think he should do Drum Clinics. He's qualified. The best drummers in the world do clinics, but I havent ever heard of an Alex Van Halen Drum Clinic
