Even though more HD programming is available on the dish as of now, the future is cable.
Dish will NEVER be able to offer ON DEMAND programming which is the way of the future as well.

If you have ever had both like I have and ever needed a service call for whatever reason, you will likely get the cable tech that same day or the next at your house. And I have heard of stories and experienced it forst hand of waiting a week or even 4 weeks for a service call with dish.

Plus when you can lump your internet, cable and phone all in one bill, it makes life alot easier as well.

Plus IMO DVR is much easier than Tivo.

I can onle speak for Canadian customers, but Digital cable is not true digital, it is a analog signal going through a digitally enhanced filter, where as Express Vu, StarCoice or any other Sat provider is 100% true digital, there is a big difference, as far as High Def goes, if you TV has a built in converter you woun`t need a HD receiver, if it dosen`t then you have to purchase or rent one, I paid 300 for mine I have the ExpressVu 6100 a absolute wicked receiver I might add, now I have heard that Star Choices HD receiver is better built ( it`s Motorolla) though, with either one of these you want to go ATLEAST component video for you connection, if not you are pissing in the wind, or you can drop 200 plus dollars for DVI, id your TV has it, which trust me is worth the cash as I took the plung and have not regretted it, as it transmitts true High def. You can go DVI, or HMI, the difference is that HMI is both sound and video where as DVI is dedictaed totally to video.

Just a head up, the CRTC in Canda has ruled that by the end of 2006, ALL cable has to be 100% digital, so it should be a nice price war when it happens.

I love my Direct TV! The customer service is wonderful...the TIVO is great...my HD channels are beautiful...being a Detroiter now living in Florida I love being able to watch Fox Sports Net Detroit(and all other regions as well) and MOST importantly..they have the NFL Sunday Ticket!
This is also an amazing story...we were right in eyes of hurricanes Frances and Jeanne. Our neighbors lost their cable....we lost good part of our roof and but our satellite reception NEVER failed us. Now THAT is impressive!
My wife called Direct TV to tell them about this and of course they are loving it. They told her they want her to write a formal letter and they might want to use the story in advertising. The cable companies always try to sway you away from Direct TV by saying 'oh if it rains you lose recepetion'. We kept it through 12 hours of 115+mph winds and driving rain! Go figure!

I have Direct TV and love it. The DVR recorder is fantastic.
I have never had a problem with service, they have always acted within a day of my phone call. I get huge wind storms at my house in the Spring and Fall, sometimes 70 mph gusts and have never had a problem with reception.

I have had Direct TV off and on for six years and have never had a problem with them.

    Good product, good service!!

We get thunderstorms often especially during the summer and I have never had problems during them either.Maybe it's just my geographic location because I too, have heard of people having reception problems during storms.

I cant remember ever losing reception during a thunder storm. I am not saying it doesnt happen, just that I dont recall it ever happening to me.

The only time I have ever had a problem with reception was a few years ago. My dish sits down next to my dock, its the only place I could put it because of my neighbours huge tree's, the tree's blocked the site line of satelight. I was on the phone and noticed my reception was fading in and out, when I got off the phone I went out onto the deck to see if something had fallen on the dish. I found some people had set up a picnic on my DOCK!! They were fishing and setting out food like they were at the State Park, everytime they would walk in front of the dish it would cause the reception to fade. I walked down the trail and asked them what they were doing???? They did not see anythign wrong with what they had done, I informed them they were on PRIVATE PROPERTY!! They still did not want to leave, I informed them that a public boat launch was at the south end of the lake and to use it or I was going to call the Sheriff. The huffed and grumbled and walked right back out my driveway to there car.

I am still blown away at that.

As long as you get your satellite set up right, you'll never lose your signal. The key is an installer who knows what he's doing.

can you expand on that a little? Every time we have a 'real' thunderstorm I loose it. Sometimes 10 minutes sometimes an hour. Looks like a clear shot to the sky where it is set up though.

edit to post this relevant info I found:

I of course do not know this from experience , this info has all been passed onto me from friends.

The thing that shouldn't surprise anyone is that OLO was naked.

Never having had satellite TV, I can't comment on the service. I can, however, say a bit about the little KU-band dishes that they use. When I worked for the weather services company last year, we transitioned to KU from C-band, which uses much larger dishes. The customers were plenty unhappy about that. KU-band dishes are the same as used for Dish service, and they're pretty susceptible to rain fade. That's the term used when the signal is attenuated, or blocked, physically by rain. It's no different than if you try to place the dish behind trees, or when people walk in front of it as OLO experienced. As you get stronger waves of rain, the signal your dish picks up degrades. Proper installation can mitigate, but not eliminate, this problem. It takes a fair bit of time to get a dish pointed correctly, and sometimes the folks doing it aren't so good at it. The more properly it's pointed, the better it'll pick up the signal. It also depends greatly on your latitude. The satellite is in a geosynchronous orbit over the equator, so the further north you go the more critical the pointing of your dish is.

The cable run from the dish to the receiver can also affect this. If you think of how a guitar amp distorts, you'll start to understand what happens when the LNB on the dish is overdriven. There's a fine mix to be found between cable length, gain, and how the dish is pointed. Such things caused me great headaches last fall.
