Default I got to sing Unchained with the Atomic Punks!!!

My best friend and I were front row, as always, and the Punks were rocking hard. That was the best show I've ever seen them do. And I've seen them like 7 times. So it's towards the end of the set and they're playing "Ice Cream Man". Ralph (the singer) has the crowd sing the end ("All my flavors are guarantee-ee-ee-eeeeed to satisfy!") and of course, the crowd as a whole sucks. That's the shtick, the whole crowd sucks, so then Ralph starts picking people out of the crowd to try it. He goes one by one, if someone's laughing he'll have them try it. So a bunch of people sing, some ok, some crappy. I've seen this some routine 7 times but i've never volunteered to sing it. I'd finally had enough. I was right in front of Ralph and I just said "let me try it". He set it up and I then proceeded to frickin' NAIL IT!!!! Boom! The crowd goes wild and Ralph says "Get your ass up here". So I go up on stage and I said "What am I doin up here Ralph?" and he goes "I want to see if you can sing on the stage and not in the crowd". So the band starts playing an Ozzy song, and he's like "Can you sing some Ozzy?" I say "No, no, no. I'm all about Halen". Ralph asks me which Halen song I want to sing, any song. I tell him Unchained. He grumbles about wanting to sing that song, then hands me the mic and walks off. Then, the best band in the world (next to the real Van Halen) launched into it and I proceeded to sing the ENTIRE SONG!!!! I rocked that place out. Nailed it too. Ralph was impressed. It was the single coolest thing I've ever done in my life.

"Here's to your thin red line... Ohh I'm steppin OVER!!!"

    That song is awesome!!!

    AWESOME!!!

That's the most awesome experience I've heard in a LONG TIME! That's incredible!!!! GOOD JOB! I wish I was there! I've heard from a friend that the Punks try to get the crowd into it and start handing the people the mic to keep you on your toes!!! That's funny how you made Ralph a little jealous by stealing Unchained from him!
Question: did you sing the part where DLR goes: "One break......comingggggggggg up!"? How did you sing it? Once again, THAT WAS SWEET!

Oh man I get goose bumps just reliving it. I was so nervous that when it was right about to go into the first verse, I thought to myself "Shit I forgot the words!!!" (and i've probably heard the song 10,000,000 times, would've thought i would remember if i was an amnesiac). But just as it kicked in, it all came back. I really got into, as I knew it was a once in a lifetime experience. When it got to the breakdown, i looked over at Ralph and said "hey man, that shit is YOU!" (referring to his Diamond Dave outfit complete with spandex and VH 84 world tour shirt) and he kept saying "Work the crowd man!" So when it got to the "One break!"..part I just watched the band and followed their lead. It went perfectly. People were going nuts! Once again, the coolest thing I've ever done! I just wish I had video. I'd show my grandkids!

It was at the Velvet Jones in Santa Barbara. February 11th, 2005.

    That's awesome!!!!

I've done the "Ice Cream Man" thing with the punks before. I was front row for a show and Ralph put the mic in my face so I sang it. He thought I was pretty good, but there's no way in hell I could've gone up on stage and sang Unchained. I would've totally screwed it up and probably passed out from being nervous. LOL

Funny story. I asked Ralph how that Anaheim HOB gig went the night before. He said "Oh man, we knew you wouldn't be there so we called Dave, and Mikey, and Eddie, and Alex and Van Halen reunited for one night. Sorry you missed it, maybe next time, say in 30 years." I said, you're a dick! We laughed.
