Default About the "Fanatic" on VHIII tour

Back on the III tour, there was an MTV show called "Fanatic" where big fans could meet the bands they loved. Some dude got to meet Eddie & Co. and get on stage in Boston. Is that dude on this board? Speak up bro.

    Anyone else remember this?

I still have that saved to VHS. I was/am so jeleous of that kid for getting to hang with the band and interview them. Then at the end he got to go up on stage and sing the end of Panama. And he proceeded to fuck it up! Still what a thrill that must've been.

I saw the program on MTV. Funny thing is he was asked if he plays guitar and he tries to play the second part of Eruption. Ed and Al were just smiling big.

That guy was from Memphis. It was pretty cool when the band hit Nashville. Thanks to Scotty Ross, I had some meet and greets...the "fanatic" kid was in front of me...the band instantly recognized him...very cool for him.

I don't remember that one, I remember the one of the girl who went and saw Jewel only because she was from Lexington, KY and you pass by her house on the way into Winchester! Okay, I was, like, 7, give me a break!
So you broke down, trying to leave town, I broke down crying on your return. You left me feeling hopeful, I'll never see your face again. You made for a bad lover's liver. You stole all the covers and busted my head. You made me such an asshole, I wish we'd never met. I'm tired of being bored. I'm through with the headaches. Hiding my hands that tremble like earthquakes. Under the table, under the daytime sky, Good Fucking Bye- Good Fucking Bye, Alkaline Trio

Yea, I recall that show. It was very funny when the kid claimed to play guitar and Eddie handed him the Wolf he happened to be carrying and the kid didn't even know how to hold the thing. I recall Eddie having a very weird look on his face and Al kind of just chuckling in the background...

    Bored + Internet = Google.

    Here's what I found out:

Chris Haley, 24, lead singer of Mauxfaux, decided to pursue music after singing on stage with Van Halen in Boston when he was 17.

"MTV had this show called 'Fanatic' where they would try to find the person that was the biggest fan of some band or actor or whatever and they would surprise them and take them off to meet them," he said. "I was over swimming in a friend's pool and all of a sudden a film crew comes in through her house and is like, 'Hey, get out. We're taking you to Boston to meet Van Halen.' It didn't even seem real."

His first glimpse of the band when he got to Boston was at the sound check at FleetCenter. "I see them playing and my knees just went out. I just kind of hit the ground. I couldn't believe what was happening. They were just talking and walking and I'm back there on the floor."

He hung out with the band members before the concert. Then, during the show, he was called onstage to sing part of "Panama."

"You get up on stage and there's this huge screen behind you that you're on and there's 15,000 people in front of you screaming. Their singer, who at the time was Gary Cherone, just comes up to me acting like he knows me. He gives me the mike and kind of bows out.

"On the plane ride back, I was thinking, 'I have to get involved. I can do this.'"

Haley and Mauxfaux, which includes, Edward Stanley, 22, rhythm guitarist; Josh Hawkins, 23, lead guitarist; Adam Dodds, 23, bass player; and Daryl Stephens, 30, drummer, won first place in the Jan. 15 Emergenza unsigned band contest at the Hi-Tone. They'll participate in the second of the three monthly elimination rounds at 10:30 p.m. April 30 at Young Ave. Deli.

The winner was selected by an audience show of hands. "I expected us to do pretty well," Hawkins said, "but after we were done playing and people started voting, everybody in the whole room was on their feet."

"The MC guy goes, 'Yeah, I think you might want to check outside, 'cause there's probably some people out there with their hands up, too,'" Haley said.

"Drop Back" is one of their popular songs. Stanley, who wrote the lyrics, described the song: "It's such a lame teenage thing, but I remember my freshman year at college and just being surrounded by mediocrity, just totally. It's like I'd moved on to college, but had I really? These people were sitting around and they weren't worried about this class. They were still worried about the same mediocre, sophomoric things they were worried about in high school and were still making stupid jokes."

People sing "Drop Back" with them at their shows, Haley said. "The chorus is pretty simple. It's just like, 'You know you gotta drop back. Woooah.' And we do all the 'woooahs' and stuff. And we hear people shouting back 'woooahs' at us."

Mauxfaux puts on energetic shows. "We tear the roof off of every club we play," Stephens said.

Sometimes literally. Part of the ceiling fell during one of their shows at the Full Moon Club at Zinnie's East. "Chunks off the roof were falling because we were rocking so hard," Hawkins said.

"That same night that happened we also made someone throw up," Haley said. "We were getting into it so hard. It wasn't like a drinking thing. It was literally he'd been going so hard."

"It was like an exertion vomit," Stanley said.

I second that, even though I live here in the States. Does anyone have it for download or on a DVD? Also, does anyone have footage for download or on a DVD of the time when those fanatic girls got to go to Eddie's house and the 5150 studio because they won the contest of naming Sammy's "I Never Said Goodbye" album? Thanks!
