    Default 5150 hot rod mods?

Just curious as to what mods people have done to their 5150's? I got my 5150 combo all apart for a bad capacitor and I figure I'd look at what mods are being done to them. Also I plan on changing the tubes, what brand are you guys using and are you messing with the biasing? Do you need to rebias the tubes when changing the power tubes?

Excellent questions! I'm doing the same thing.

I've read about quite a few people who've tried lower-wattage speakers, or changing to EL-34 power tubes.

I've heard people who thought putting el-34 tubes into a 5150 sucked. Plus l think it will make the output transformer more likly to blow. Don't quote me, not really electroniclly minded.

I've put jj tubes into my 5150ii, and they kick ass over the stock tubes.

EL-34's tend to compress more and break up easier, not something you need with a 5150.
You'd have to do some resistor mods to install EL-34's, and even doing that, they'll draw more power which can damage a transformer.
You're better off experimenting with good 6L6's.
JJ's are a good tube, but you'll have to rebias to have the amp sound it's best.

I believe you can use Yellow Jackets and make the switch rather easily.

I agree about the compression, though.

There are many on other forums who use different cabinets with their 5150s because they don't like the sound, and because Eddie himself doesn't use the stock speakers in the 5150 cabs......maybe that's an alternative that would be more appealing to the thread starter......I dunno.

I know I've mentioned it ad-nauseum before, but if I had my old 5150 combo, I'd like to try a PAF style pickup through the Lead channel (which I never used), and switch to lower wattage speakers.

I now generally agree with the idea that:

high output pickups into a cranked high-gain amplifier = loss of too much bandwidth
