Default Cable Television and Phone questions

I made the leap today from our regular local phone service to signing up with our cable company (Brighthouse) to carry our phone - $39.95 a month - unlimited local and long distance. With my wife travelling all the time now, it just made sense as our phone bills are going up. Has anyone had any trouble with this service or is the change unnoticeable?

Also, with the money I should now be saving, I took a hop and resigned up for Digital Cable and added a DVR. Anyone have any trouble with the DVR's? Any chance you can download what you've recorded to a computer?

    Thanks.

I currently have the unlimited local and long distance thru Cox Cable down here, and haven't had a problem at all. It's nice to not have to wait until nighttime to get better rates, and to play the "how many minutes do I have left on my mobile" game. Wanna talk to someone in Chicago? Already paid for!

I also have a DVR, namely DirecTV with Tivo. I don't know about burning to a computer, but I am able to burn to a DVD player I hooked up. I'm sure you could burn to a computer if you have the right connectors and software, but that's technology light years beyond me!
    Nothing to see here.

i actually work for the cable company and we offer all those features. the dvr is a blessing from god. i cant live without the machine now. with a 2 year old taking all our time, we miss a lot of shows. we just record them and watch when and if she ever sleeps and on weekends. i recently had to reformat may dvr.... it got a bit clogged. i have had it for over a year and had no other problems. we just launched the digital phone and it is not available where i live until march. it seems to going very well. just over 2000 subscribers since i think august.
since i work for them i get everything but digital phone free!!!!!!!!!! i have to pay half price for the phone when it comes available. i get about $200 in services for nothing. a good benefit!

i have not hooked up my dvr to the computer but i have hooked it up to my vcr and it worked fine.

I got the whole package (cable, HS internet, phone) from Time Warner here. Great services. The only thing with the phone is if you have a power or cable outage, you lose the phone signal, too, since the phone service is actually voice over IP. Just a minor thing to be aware of.

P.S. - I pay about $100 per month for all three services, if anyone was interested...

Vonage will generally beat that $39.99 a month. When I looked into it I think it was about $25 for the same services.

    I thought Vonage was $19.95 a month.

It's a lot like a cell phone plan. Varying rates for different levels of service.

There is an issue of 9-1-1 on your phone service over broadband. Over normal phone lines, 9-1-1 traces the call and your address comes up automatically.

With broadband, I am not sure where the call traces back to.

It's my understanding that they're working on it....anyone else heard this.

There was a story on the news a few weeks back that some of these "cable phone lines" are not 911 ready and that a separate conncetion needs to be established. The story was about a family who dialed 911 and couldn't get through becuase they had not set up the 911. I would check with your carrier to make sure you have 911 capabilities.

They were talking about that on XM radio. There was someone from Houston, I believe, that couldn't get through and it ended up fatal...

Anyone use EarthLink trueVoice? They are showing a rate of 24.95 and they (EarthLink - which I use already via my cable provider) are always flashing good rates for DSL and I wonder if it would be worth it to try switching to cut a few bucks off a month (currently all bundled in with the rest of my cable, so I'm not sure what would happen to the rest of the bill if I started cutting stuff out)

I have Comcast digital cable with a DVR (2 of them, actually). The DVR's are awesome. Like everyone else has said, once you have one, you can't live without one. There is a way to connect it to the computer and transfer the shows, at least with the model I have. I've connected it and got it working, but haven't spent the time to record anything to the computer. You can't just transfer the files. You have to play the show on the DVR while the computer is recording it.

I also have Vonage. Comcast is offering digital phone for $39.99/month and our Vonage bill is only about $28/month after taxes and such. It works very well as long as the Internet connection is working well. I like that it will email me whenever we get a message and have the voice recording attached. If there ever is a power outage, you can set it up to forward to your cell phone. And 911 does work. Or so they say. Luckily, I haven't had to test it. When you dial 911, it first goes to a Vonage (I think) substation that pulls up your address from their database and then goes to the 911 operator. Or something like that.
