Been awhile since I have read this. Interesting that Sammy called Mike "a spineless wonder". And while Sam was right about Ray Daniels, Tim Collins would not have been the right manager either (his seperation from Aerosmith was UGLY). And wanting VH to create "dance music"? No thank you Sammy. It is also very sad to read about how Sammy treated Betsy. Sammy is a greedy mother fucker, no doubt about it. The bottom line is Sammy saying "when Ed Leffler died, I lost control of the band. When he was alive, I made all the decisions". Just like DLR, Sammy let his ego get in the way.

That's a really cool read. Have to come back to finish it though. Boy, the drama is tiring.

Not once during the entire time we toured over there, did the
crowd ever chant, "Eddie, Eddie, Eddie." After some songs, I tried to get the
crowd fired up by yelling Eddie's name over the loud speakers. Every time it
was met with dead silence. By the end of the tour, he was so bummed out, he
even cut his guitar solo down to one minute. Whoever heard of Eddie Van Halen
playing a one minute guitar solo? They did in Europe. It got so bad for him
over there, sometimes he didn't even solo during a show. Man, I'm telling you,
there were no drum or bass solos, or acoustic versions of 'Give to Live' and
'Eagles Fly.' This tour had to be one of the most depressing times on the road
I ever witnessed with Van Halen. In probably half the shows we played, we got
no encores. This band was absolutely nothing over there. There would be
occasions where we had our little contingent of 10,000 fans jumping up and
    down yelling "Yeah, Van Halen!"
But you know what when this scene is happening in a stadium with 70,000
people, it's embarrassing. I'd be standing on the stage looking at this ocean
of people not responding to our music thinking, "Sorry, I thought maybe you would like this." It was totally fucked for us. We'd play the last song of our set,
say thank you and that was it. Ray Danniels said we were big over there. Screw
him! Sometimes we even went back on stage for an encore when the crowd didn't want one. We just said, "To hell with it. Let's go back and do another one.
"Van Halen wasn't getting called back for any encores until we finally wised
up and made 'Jump' the last song of the set. That would get people going, and
we'd come back for another song. Even then, it didn't always work. Bon Jovi
sold out Wembley Stadium three consecutive nights toward the end of the tour.
We ended each performance with 'Jump,' and nobody cared. Each night over
70,000 people had paid money to see Bon Jovi, and Bon Jovi only. I was amazed that nobody gave a damn about Van Halen. Believe me, this band was totally humbled by the experience. The last festival date for Van Halen was June 28, at Sheffield, England.

And you wonder WHY VH didn't go to Europe on the reunion tour ?

Wow that really explains a lot. Talk about a puppet master (Daniels). I'm shocked that Sammy ever wanted to talk to those guys again! Although he's no saint either. Save the drama for you mama.

VH came back to Europe after ignoring the fans for over 10 years and expected the same reaction they got from fans who saw them year after year. Bad promotion and piss poor planning buggered that tour up. With the right promotion and resurgence of guitar rock sweeping the place, last year (or even this year) would have been the ideal time to come back and blow the Darkness out of the water. Sammy Hagar has always ignored Europe, even with his own band. To give Dave his credit, he had the UK in his hands in 84 and VH could have capitalised on that with Sammy but chose not to. Bon Jovi have always had a strong following here cos JBJ made it his business to be seen here from time to time. And thats why they did well and still do.

VH have to realise they're not the biggest band in the world. At one stage (1984), they probably were, but now, and ever since, they just can't think that. They seem to think they can go anywhere and sell out stadiums after disappearing for years. It's not true. Europe didn't care in 1995 because Van Halen didn't care in the years prior.

According to Eddie, they never got to tour Europe (let alone Australia) up till the Balance Tour was because of Sammy's commitments to his solo career.

That's a great read btw and good to know in detail Sammy's spin on what went down.

What does he mean "solo career????"

I read it a while ago, it was/is a very good read, l wouldn't mind reading the whole book though.

Seems odd to me that there were no "Eddie" chants in Europe. I guess you gotta market to build the audience. Whatever, I would have thought that the music would have spoken for itself, and their history would have counted for something. I don't mind BonJovi, but if I were Eddie and the boys, I would have been really bummed out with that reaction, considering what they had in the past. Personally, I saw Eddie nearly cry (multiple times) at Joe Lewis when the "Eddie" chant happened. It was soooo loud. I mean the guy was really emotional about it, and it meant a lot to him and the band. Hell I was bursting with happiness when it happened for the guy.

About sammy being greedy, well, probably. You'd think they had enough already......
