    Default Sammy "Spin Magazine" Mention

Sam was briefly mentioned in a writer's article in the
    March 2005 issue of "Spin".

The writer talks about Elvis Costello, and several
other artists. In it, he mentions how a few years ago
he was in a record store in Mill Valley and while he
was there shopping, Sam just happened to waltz in.

    Here's the Hagar mention:

"A couple years ago, I was in a record store in Mill
Valley, California, a famous sort of record store. It
looks like it took decades to decorate-it's plastered,
every inch of it, with old posters and playbills and
album covers and promotional shots of soul singers and
early Elvis Presley, and concert posters for Buddy
Holly, Mary Wells, and a thousand others. It's
probably unequaled in the world for the
history-of-rock glory it shines upon you.

    Anyway, I was in there-this is a true story-on a day
when Elvis Costello music was filling the place, and
the songs sounded very good but totally unfamiliar. I
was making my way toward the front counter, to ask
about the music, when a man walked in. The man,
well-tanned, had shaggy blond hair, curly like the
curly kind of pasta, and looked almost exactly like
Sammy Hagar. He approached the gray-haired man behind
the counter and the exchange went something like this:

Pasta-haired man: "So, is the album selling well?"
Counter-man: "Well, not as good as the Van Halen."
Pasta-haired man, somewhat dispirited: "Oh. Really?"
    Counter-man: "Yeah. Really."

I won't hold you in suspense. The shaggy man was
actually Sammy Hagar, asking about the sales of his
most recent album-maybe the live one from 2003?-while
the record store owner had to admit the Van Halen
greatest-hits collection was murdering it, sales-wise.
Hagar nodded and smiled, resigned. He seemed like a
    nice enough guy."

There you have it. This was the only time Sam was
mentioned in the article. Sounds as though the Hagar
album the writer was trying to reference was probably
"Not 4 Sale", seeing as how even Sam has mentioned in
the past that since the album was self-financed and
very hard to find, it sold rather poorly.

Kinda hard to believe, though, that 7 years after its
initial release, "BOV1", the VH greatest-hits
collection mentioned above, was still selling big
time. Pretty cool, if you ask me.

Good story, though. I liked it.
"Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that."

"This is a lttle prayer dedicated to the separation of church and state. I guess if they are going to force those kids to pray in schools they might as well have a nice prayer like this: Our Father who art in heaven, and to the republic for which it stands, thy kingdom come, one nation indivisible as in heaven, give us this day as we forgive those who so proudly we hail. Crown thy good into temptation but deliver us from the twilight's last gleaming. Amen and Awomen. ."

"I think it's the duty of the comedian to find out where the line is drawn and cross it deliberately."

    -George Carlin 1937 - 2008

    Ah, Mill Valley......

I once sat in the Sweetwater one rainy afternoon on a first date. It was her idea to go to the place, being a SF native and knowing where to catch the finest music. I remember her mentioning Sammy liked to drop in from time to time.
    Mill Valley's just lovely.

Been to the Sweetwater. Was there one night when Robben Ford, Steve Smith (Journey's real drummer), and Jack Blades from Night Ranger were doing an impromptu jam type session. It was fucking killer & that wasn't even on par with the real legends that throw down in there on a regular basis....
Q: Recording the album took so long your Australian tour last year was cancelled. What was it like in the studio? There's a history of tension between you and Eddie Van Halen...

DLR: It was like a stand off in a Chuck Norris movie. We each had the laser dot on everybody's forehead waiting for the other guy to blink. Except for Wolfie, he had a Super Soaker ...

    SAMMY ROCKS

Wouldn't it be a trip if you went to your favorite record store, and you're rubbing elbows with Sammy?! That would be so COOL!

    Aw, man. Smith and Blades?

One of the most underrated drummers in Rock & Roll...

And Robben Ford jams the blues like no other,
