Bank heist suspect's radio call-in puts him on hold

    By Matt O'Connor
    Tribune staff reporter
    Published February 24, 2005

As part of a regular Friday morning feature called "Wheel of Trash," the disc jockeys at Kiss 103.5 FM usually enlisted listeners to call in with weird tales of woe, such as how they fell in love with a stepbrother or cheated on a wife.

But last Sept. 24, co-host Mel-T suddenly wanted to hear from anyone who robbed a bank.

Within seconds, a man identifying himself as "D," was on the air, recounting in detail how he and several other people had held up a TCF Bank in a Jewel Food Store.

The caller said he "knew the girl that worked in the bank," according to a court filing. "We set everything up, we planned it out. ... [We] acted it out for, like, weeks."

When two bandits robbed the bank, the female employee handed over money from the vault "but [l]eft all the fake money there, ya know, the money that explodes," the caller said.

Less than 1 1/2 hours after that call, FBI agents were at the station asking to listen to a tape of the conversation, Rod Phillips, the station's program director, said Wednesday.

"D" was identified by authorities as Randy Washington, 24, of Dolton, and Washington and William Slate, 18, formerly of Tinley Park, have been charged with robbing the TCF Bank at 3220 S. Chicago Rd., South Chicago Heights, of about $81,000 last April 8.

Authorities are investigating four other people, including a former teller suspected of assisting the robbers.

Washington is in custody. His lawyer didn't fight detention, said Assistant U.S. Atty. Terra Brown. Slate, who moved to Plano, Texas, was arrested there and is expected to be brought here to face the charge within two weeks, Brown said.

Slate held up he bank with a second man, and Washington provided the getaway car, according to the criminal complaint lodged against them.

Authorities said the FBI quickly learned about "D" bragging on the radio because a worker at the bank was listening and thought the description fit the April 8 heist. The FBI said one of its employees also heard the program.

The FBI subpoenaed the station's phone records and traced the call to Washington, authorities said.

"D" said he had spent the bank loot on a shopping spree on Michigan Avenue, "buyin' Louis Vuitton this, Blass that, everything, man."

Records from Louis Vuitton, a luxury leather goods store at 900 N. Michigan Ave., show that Washington bought a $240 men's billfold with cash two days after the holdup.

After the FBI confronted Washington at his home, he made a couple of calls to Slate a short time later, the first indication of Slate's involvement, authorities said.

In the interview, Washington admitted to the FBI that he had called the station but denied he was personally involved in the robbery. He said he learned of the details from two men he knew by first name only.

A friend and former roommate of Slate's worked undercover for the FBI and secretly tape-recorded Slate admitting his share from the robbery had been $13,000, authorities said.

The radio station should get people to call in with tales of shooting JFK.

Here is today's dumbass criminal story from cnn.com:

    Burglars held after calling police
Friday, February 25, 2005 Posted: 7:41 AM EST (1241 GMT)

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) -- When two Danish burglars realized someone had stolen the keys to their getaway car, they reacted like honest citizens and called the police.

Police said they were only too happy to help, and arrested them after they confessed to breaking and entering.

The men, identified only as an 18-year-old and a 20-year-old, broke into a summer cabin late Wednesday near Kaldred, 90 kilometers (55 miles) west of capital Copenhagen.

As they carried their haul to the car, they were confronted by a passer-by, who witnessed the break-in and insisted that they return the stolen property.

To ensure they couldn't get away, the passer-by took the keys from their car, and refused to return them.

"The two young men then called us and said they needed our help getting their keys back," Chief Superintendent Asger Larsen said on Thursday.

He said the two realized that without the keys, they would have to leave their car at the scene, which would put the police on their trail and lead to their arrest anyway.

"It's a pretty straightforward case for us, since this time, the thieves actually reported the robbery," Larsen said.

He declined to release the names of the suspects or the passer-by.
