Hmmm - I'm not sure that "Everyone does this" these days. If you follow that same line of thinking, then you shouldn't do things like string bending, vibrato or alternate picking because everyone does those too. At the end of the day, tapping is just another technique and we're long past the time when it was a fad or a bandwagon. If you want to learn it, go ahead, but just remember that it should be just another part of your vocabulary, not a big trick or a gimmick.

It may be that your teacher wants you to get your fundamentals right before moving on to the flashy stuff, and if that's the case, then he has a good point and I wouldn't disagree with him. I don't have time at the moment to post any instructional stuff on tapping but I'll see if I can manage over the next few days - no promises, though, as I'm not getting the time to hang out here that I used to.

Its hard to tell somebody how to do it without a guitar handy to show them but your basically pressing your right hand(or picking hand) index finger or your middle finger (which ever u prefer) down to the fret board and releasing to the note that your fretting hand is on. Its not a quick tap like a lot of people think. You'll get the hang of it eventually.

Go to a site called jfrocks.com and theres a lessong video on the basics of EVH technique.

The proper name or phrase is "Hammer-on/Pull-off", 'cuz that's what you do.

I use my middle finger to hammer. The motion is just like you've got a booger on your finger and you're trying rub it off.

Try it with an open string at first, hammer the G string at the 7th fret. Go slow. Hit the string and hold your finger there so that you sound the note. Then pull your finger off (booger refference) to sound the open note. Repeat and go faster each time.

That will get you started. The rest will depend on how quickly you learn your scales and extensions.

    Default Guitar teachers are funny...

I never had a guitar teacher...well not for more than a month...

I got stuck in my playing so I decided to try lessons and this is after I had been playing for about 3 years and I was already tapping and using vibrato...
He actually liked my vibrato and told me it was nice...anyway...
He wanted to start me off near square one....it was the hardest stuff I had to do....sounds crazy but it was...
Your better off learning with a professional teacher because he can use proper building blocks of teaching, and in the end youll be a better player..
and most certainly a more flexable player which will make you more valueable.

Anyway I had stopped taking lessons and I continued on, learning bad habits and the like...you can aviod that by having a teacher....

There are lots of ways to go with tapping, but this may be a good start:

    Just watch Ed.

It's a touch thing. Once you get the the fingers moving, just move it around on the neck. I always thought there was a "secret" to it, but just use your index finger and pinky on your fret hand and tap with whatever finger you want with your pick hand. Try moving your fret hand to different places on the neck, with various spreads and then move your picking hand around and tap on the string at various places on the neck. Soon you'll find "Ed's Series of Notes".

    Just have fun with it.

BTW, I could tap better 5 years ago than today. It's a skill that takes practice...and it seems like the only time I tap is warming up for just wanking off. Real players are able to incorporate tapping into their everday playing....that's talent.
Actually I think most of us are Dave, Sam, and Mike fans. There's just a small group of people who have strange allegiances and like to get into petty pissing contests that I can't believe everyone on this site isn't bored of. - Brett

Well, shit, if everyone's doing it, then don't do it like your teacher said. Instead, practice the whammy bar dives and other varying annoying sounds that you can create with your whammy to piss off your teacher...

    Ok, maybe not...
