    Default Home Theater A/V Help

I know there was a thread around here at some point but I couldn't find it. Maybe it was lost in the hack. Hopefully someone can help me out. Sorry, I can't remember who the resident expert is...

I just bought a Pioneer 6.1 home theater system and I'm trying to hook up the following components:

    Pioneer 6.1 receiver
36" Sony Wega TV (not HD)
    VCR (no S-video, only RCA)
    Digital cable box
    DVD player

I've read that the best way to hook my DVD player into my receiver is with the 5.1 multichannel analog outputs. I assume that's because it isolates the channels. Does that mean that the 6.1 audio will only be 5.1 since I'm using the 5.1 outs?
If I hook my VCR and digital cable box into my receiver, can I still record digital cable programming or do they need hooked together directly? If the receiver is off, will all of the other components hooked into it still work (record, view, play)?
Are there any sites out there that give me easy hookup options for multiple components?
Also, is 75-ohm coaxial (cable) connection better than RCA connections in terms of audio or video clarity?

Thanks to anyone who can help me out.

Check out the DVD-A vs SACD thread . It's gots lots of good info from Evans5150 on how to get the most out of your system.

Evans5150 will be a good source so PM him if he doesn't eventually respond to the thread.

Thanks Cabot. I figured it was probably around somewhere. Apparently I wasn't searching for the right things.
Mods-You can probably close this one up.

Just a quick note Resurrection. If you are talking about the best way to hook up your DVD player to your 6.1 receiver to watch movies...use either the DIGITAL Coax or the Optical output from your DVD player to your Receiver (only one cable for each). Fiber is supposed to sound better than the Coax cable...but again...you would have to be a dog to tell the difference. This is how DVD's were meant to be heard in terms of movies. The Receiver will then decode the signal from the DVD player and send it to the correct channels. I'll look at the rest of your post later...I have to run now.

My Dad came over to my house several weeks ago and was so impressed that he insisted I help him build a system. It was kinda fun to spend his money for him and now he's got a kickin' 6.1 system. My sister boyfriend knocked out the wiring for the surround speakers. it took him from 9:30 in the morning til 9 at night. Apparently they ran into issues with beams, firewall and tiny crawl space but they eventually got the speaker wires thru the room. I guess I had the easy part.

Now my Dad has always been the kind of Dad to yell out "Turn it down."
It's fun seeing him cranking it up to 11

this is a passion of mine. if you have certain questions, i can try and help..
always remember this. if it doesnt sound good enough, you can always change it around, upgrade cables, etc...the main thing is getting it balanced for your area and your likes...then that it actually works..after that, its all fun as well!!

btw, most receivers are still NOT 6.1 or 7.1 capable. ine is 7.1 but i only use 5.1 for now...there's reasosn for that as well.
and if its music primarily, its a whole other set of issues!
