    Default Tech Gear Help.

I've drawn a blank. Isn't there just a basic text message/e-mail station out there somewhere?

The idea is for guests to send and recieve e-mail without buying another computer. I thought they made something like this already but I guess I don't know what the hell they're called. It's got a basic LCD screen and keyboard and either attaches to a phone jack or another net connector.

    Did they stop making them?

I'm obviously clueless here, any help will be appreciated.

E-mail stations went over like a lead balloon, and to the best of my knowledge nobody makes them anymore. Their limited functionality and the low price of cheap PCs drove them out of the marketplace. They were mostly POP3 machines, which isn't what your customers would want--they'd want access to web mail, for the most part.

    I'm exploring options.

The idea origonally was to have just a basic tower in a seperate room, then a flat, LCD, mouted on the wall and a shelf for the keyboard and mouse. Since it's only for internet the computer doesn't have to be expensive. I was hoping for a simple text machine because I hope to limit time one the thing and I don't want people going to a discount travel website and either finding out they could have gotten a lower rate and/or hunting for a lower priced motel in my lobby while paying guests.

My boss just get's a wild hair up his ass. He want's to charge for internet use but we already offer fre wireless - highspeed access from the rooms. All you need is your laptop or PDA and a wireless NIC. In my view, we are already ahead of the game. If we provide a terminal in the lobby I think it should be free, or a basic flat rate with a time limit. Only because as WIFI expands people are going to expect free access, the boss hitting them up like Kinko's will piss folks off, especially when the motel down the street puts up a sign offering the same thing for free.

"Business Centers" are a pain in the ass. If you decide to set up a PC and turn guests loose on it, make sure you make a copy of the harddrive or keep the restore CD handy if you don't add anything - they'll download so much crap and have it fucked up faster than you can say "format c:". My wife had to restore the one at her hotel about every other month it seemed. Not to mention the one time folks tried to steal it...
People just don't have any respect for others' property anymore...

    Good luck.
