    Default Strat Setup preferences

I don't know how many of you guys play Strats, but I thought it would be cool to see how everyone sets their Strats up.

I recently got my first Strat, a Highway 1, and to reiterate, I am no Strat purist by any means. I finally got the neck pickup fixed and the neck aligned, and I've been playin her quite a bit lately. I had her setup with 10's, and I told the tech to set it up with the bridge resting on the body. Well, he didn't do that, but the pickup was a mother for him and I didn't get charged that much so I said fuck it I'll set it up myself.

I was playin the hell out of some blues on that mother for a while and I was lovin it. I don't have many other Strats to compare her to, but I don't have the time, resources (Music stores nearby), or the money to play through nine thousand different Strats either. But not having the Tremolo resting on the body, I like giving some chordal work a little shimmer every now and then. On the other hand, I've been thinking about bringing the Trem down.

I was wondering if alot of you guys rest the Trem on the body, or leave a little space for some "bigsby style" whang bar action.
    FUCK THE DUMB SHIT!!!!

I like the trem resting on the body. 4 springs holds it well.

With the bridge floating like that, it tends to get whacked the fuck outta tune u whammy any. Mines on the body with 4 springs.
Girls are like Guitars, you gotta play a few before you find the right one.

Ya can't do pedal steel bends with a floater. Personally, I'm addicted to whammy bars and I entered the 12-step plan 10-15 years ago. Basically, I've been clean ever since. However, I have been known to hang out at music stores and sneak in some dive bombs through a blazing Marshall. I try to keep these outings to a minimum. And Ed's "elephant call"? Pure heroin...

I don't know about the Fender trem, but the G&L trem floats and does a great job of staying in tune...

I prefer a little higher action and string with 10's...

I crank the trem down onto the body... was running 10's w/ 4 or 5 springs, but then started playing around with a few lower tunings like a full to full and half step down ala Billy Gibbons/ZZ Top style. Shifted back to 9's due to the tuning stuff and can get a away w/ 3 springs in it which I like the softer touch for whamage!!

I setup my action lower than a snake's belly in a tire rut. As low as it'll go with no buzzin. The only strings I'll use are Fender Superbullets 3250L. They just consistently deliver the tone I like. One other thing... every string change gets a drop of 3-in-One oil on the bridge saddles... a very light swipe of some 1000 grit sand paper in each nut slot and a dash of oil there. Make darn sure all your tuner hardware is tight, plus a minimum of 4 wraps (low E exception) on each string post with a solid overlap... no slippage on the tuners is vital for holding tune IMO.

One other mod I perform on all the strats I've owned is wiring the middle pickup wide open and shifting the bottom tone pot control over to the bridge pickup.
Woke up this mornin, got Blue Moon in your eyes...
