If it's any help, these are the settings for my 5150 combo,I don't know how much the 5150 II differs but i'm guessing the settings for the gain are the same? i get a pretty damn close setting to the balance era with these.

    Hi gain input
    lead pre - 6
    low - 6
    mid - 2
    high - 6
reverb - 9 (doesn't really matter, i just like alot of reverb)
lead post - 1 (any louder and my house would collapse!)
    resonance - 4
    presence - 7

Hope this helps, if not check this website out, you may find the answer there, i did. http://mr5150.vhvault.com/

I always thought the 'brown sound' referred to the early-Ed tone. The 5150 doesn't sound anything like the 'brown sound' to me. :shrugs:

The 5150 is a killer amp, you are right though, it's will not get a early brown sound, (but putting jj's in the pre amp is a good start), but who wants to sound like Ed? l don't, l wanna sound like me. It's like on the John Petrucci forum, it's like every member has/wants a Mesa/boogie Roadking and EBMM Petrucci. It's like "zzzzzzzz Dude, get a life" it doesn't matter if you have the same guitar, you will not sound like Petrucci, It's all in the fingers baby!!!

    End rant.

    Default What was....

Was F.U.C.K. the first album that Ed used the 5150 amp on? I think it is because its the album where I really hear Eds tone change from the Marshall to the high gain chorus saturation sound.

And....Isnt that also the first album he used his EBMM?

    I know someones gota know

    Thanks
    Ross

I think he mostly used Soldanos on FUCK, but he did use the EBMM on all of it, except "Judgment Day," which is the Kramer 5150.

He also used a single-coil equipped Fender, a Tele I think, for the rhythm part of Runaround. I think that's the best tone on the whole album.

    (Actually that's a modified 50-Watt Plexi Reissue)

Anyway, I have said this on here before, and I was told this specifically by 2 Peavey Reps back when I was selling gear for a living. I have never personally checked it out, but apparently the clean channel on the 5150II is based on Ed's Marshall. Flame me if you want, but why would I make that up? Anyway, crank up that clean channel and see what you can get...
