    Default Sammy's guitar gear

When I saw Van Halen in Kansas City last July, during his solo spot, Sammy Hagar sang “Eagles Fly” with what looked like a red Gibson Les Paul. However, it produced what sounded like a clean electric guitar, mixed with an electro-acoustic. I was sat too far back to be certain of the gear being used, but the sound was fantastic.

I know that a Parker Fly with a Fishman pickup built in, will produce such a sound and if Sammy had used a Fly, I wouldn’t have been surprised at all. However, I didn’t realise that it was possible to get a Gibson Les Paul with a Fishman fitted (unless of course the sound was produced by an effects unit rather than a modification to the Les Paul). So, in short, does anyone know anything about the guitar / effects used on that song?

    Regards

He used a Les Paul-style, Yamaha brand guitar with a piezo pickup in the bridge.

It was a Gibson from the custom shop with a Fishman power bridge built exclusively for Sammy. They are also putting it in the slash model as well. They delivered it mid tour. I think they told me they gave it to him in Louisville.

You're right though, he was using some genuine Les Pauls in the past. I don't know about this tour, but he did on the Sam & Dave tour.

Though the body shapes are fairly similar, the headstocks on a Yamaha and a Les Paul are quite distinctive and different (if they weren't Gibson would no doubt sue and win, as they did with PRS whose guitars look nothing like a Les Paul to any self respecting guitar officionado, but obviously do to a judge).

I got a bit of a sight of the guitar on the big video screens at the show and it looked very much like a Les Paul, as it definitely didn't have the strings through the body like the Yamaha appears to in that photo. That isn't to say that Sammy didn't switch guitars halfway through the tour as was suggested.

While there still appears to be a debate going on here, at least it confirms that it was a piezo equipped guitar as I thought. So thanks guys, I can now sleep at night.

It appears we are all right. It looks like Sam switched guitas somewhere in the middle of the tour.

Here is the one he played in Freson on 8/14 it is a Gibson.

Here is the one he played in Milwaukee on 11/3 it is the Yamaha.

It was a Gibson in Detroit. No doubt about it.

Yeah. No doubt about it. Now that I have seen the photos, I can confirm that the Kansas City show featured the Gibson.

No tonly has he changed guitars. It also seems that Sammy's pants had shrunk in the wash by time he got to Milwaukee.

Default Sammy's first guitar with Washburn

Does anyone remember Sammy's first Washburn guitar, at least I'm pretty sure it was a Washburn.

It came out in around 1993-95 if I'm not mistaken. I think it had some sort of Cabo Wabo inlay. It had a Charvel style body, and I think a pointy head stock. I think the promotional color was yellow. I searched on it once and found it, but that was years ago. I did a search recently, and for the life of me, I can't remember the Name/Model of that axe.

This is right off the old Halen site. Looks like a Les Paul to me...

but These are the only 2 Hagar Washburns I remember. the first one I remember him playing around the time of balance, the other I dont remember him playing.

Nah, this was Strat/Charvel style body and as I said yellow, with I believe a 12th fret Cabo Inlay.

I think it was an H-H pickup config, with a Floyd. Sure as hell been hard to find info on it lately.
