Need help with Cd Burner Problem

Hey guys, I need help with a problem I am having with my computer. I have not been able to burn cd's for about the past 2 weeks. I was using Nero 5.5.9.14 What was first happenening was that the cd would stop writing at about 3 or 4% and I would get an error message that said "Write Error" I tried burning with different programs to make sure it wasn't a software issue. Still nothing SO I scanned my computer for viruses and adware and all that junk, and defragged my hard drive. I was thinking initially it was a buffer underrun problem and this might help. After all of this I tried again, this time I got a new error message, "Power Calibration error". I looked up info on this for a fix. The recomended solutuons were to clean the lens, did that, try a different type of cd's, did that, update the aspi drivers, did that, and update the firmware of the cd writer. However I cannot find an update for my writer. I have an NEC NR 7900A. I tried an update of nero, and it burned to about 26% and stopped and again "Write Error" Help please, this is really pissing me off. I am hoping there is a fix for this without having to buy another CD drive. As for playing cd,s works fine, no problem.

You did not state your OS. I'm assuming win98 2E (millenium) because I've seen this problem before when someone installed NERO. Nero completely takes over the writing process in the windows registry, so when other programs try to write, they mess up the writing process. The ONLY solution is to uninstall Nero completely, and then try the other progs to see if that fixes it. This works 9 times out of 10. If you are using XP as your OS, there is no reason to use Nero because XP has cd writing capability built in by using the ctrl+v (paste) command onto your CD drive, then right-click and 'write these files to cd'.

Hope this helps. I just found an old copy of Nero and put it quickly in the nearest trash can.

PS - it is less a "software issue" than it is a software CONFLICT.

XP won't allow you to copy a protected DVD, but Nero will, in conjunction with DVD Shrink. therefore, Nero stays installed. and there's all kinds of plug-ins for Nero that make it useful to me.

i don't think i've ever used XP's built-in writing app. aren't they tying more of the DRM shit into that and WMP?

Your power supply could be dying a slow death. Cleaning the dirt out of it could help but PSs do die.

I'd try halving your write speed, and seeing if that makes a difference. Either way, drives are dirt cheap. $30 or so, which isn't much compared to your frustration.

Then you're the one out of 10 where the uninstall didn't remove all the traces from the registry. If XP won't write to the drive, then you should either get a new drive, or fresh install your OS - as those are the only two things left that it could possibly be. Or, you could do a rollback on your XP to a time when the drive worked. START/PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/SYSTEMTOOLS/SYSTEMRESTORE

I see no reason to use Nero with XP's Cd writing capability. Did XP attempt to write to the CD at all? There is a spot above the area that shows the contents of the drive which will state "files ready to be writen to drive" - this is the sentence you hold your curser over and right-click to choose 'write these files to CD now'. What happened when you did that?
