Default The Official Jimi Hendrix Thread

I did a search but couldn't find an "official" Hendrix thread. Just a lot of scattered theads discussing separate topics about Jimi. (Sorry mods if I missed it)

Being a lefty, here's a question I've often discussed with fellow guitarist but never got a clear answer.
Did Jimi play his guitar strung like a conventional axe (Little "E" on bottom). Sometime? All the time? No time?

I believe he restrung his guitar so high E would be closest to floor like a normal guitar would.

Thanks for the input FAST98. I've been looking for closeup photos of Jimi playing to check out his strings......Anybody got any places to look?

I'm pretty sure I'd heard that he just flipped the guitar - no restringing. The picture seems to confirm it - I'm no expert, but that looks like standard stringing to me...

Thanks for posting that pic. It's kinda hard for me to tell because I can't see the whole geetar. THIS ONE "appears" to have the fat strings on top? I'm still digging for a better pic.

Exactly, as does the first pic. And aren't the bigger strings usually on the bottom when a right-handed guitarist plays?

The biggest-fattest always are on top ( not a sex reference though ) on standard strung guitars

The low E is right where it should be, just strung for the left hand. Upside down for me, normal for Jimi. It's a "Mirror flip", no exotic string job.

Get his Isle Of White concert DVD, the sound is great and has the best version of "Red House" ever recorded (he play's that one on a Flying-V). Good footage that will answer just about every technical question you'll ever have about Mr. Hendrix.

Sacto, do you mean he flipped the guitar AND the strings over?

This guy Doyle Bramhall (seen him with Roger Waters) plays his lefty strung righty with the big e on bottom. Talk about a fingering nightmare. Being a lefty, I was forced to do this in music stores (and everywhere else) where 95% of guitars were right handed. I was just wandering if Jimi did the same thing. When I listen to Jimi, I'm thinking there is no way a human being can play all that with the strings reversed from standard. I had a right handed strat and reversed the strings and couldn't even handle the knobs right in my way. It's amazing how Jimi could even handle that alone, not to mention the trouble with playing past the 15th fret.

Yes...he would have had to, although I think there are a couple of old blues dudes who were lefty, flipped the guitar and DIDN'T flip the strings...I can't name names, but IO think I've seen that.

If you get the Are You Experienced? reissue cd, there's a great pic of JH and his guitar and it's clear he flipped the guitar over and restrung it standard for a lefty...
