The Hills Have Eyes Remake Starts in April
    Source: ComingSoon!

A remake of Wes Craven's 1977 cult classic The Hills Have Eyes is scheduled to begin filming late April for nine weeks, reports Production Weekly.

Wes Craven, who wrote and directed the original, will produce at Dimension Films. Alexandre Aja and Gregory Levasseur, the duo behind High Tension, wrote the script and Aja will direct.

The new version follows a suburban American family who take a trip cross-country. However, when their trailer breaks down mysteriously in the New Mexico desert, they are preyed upon by a family of deformed hill people. The family members must defend themselves against these horrors.

    Hayden Christensen Leads Decameron
    Source: ComingSoon!
Hayden Christensen (Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith) will play the male lead in The Decameron, Dino De Laurentiis' upcoming adaptation of the 14th century Italian classic by Giovanni Boccaccio.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Christensen will play the role of Lorenzo, starring opposite Mischa Barton (The O.C.), who in December signed on for the lead female role, Pampinea.

The project will start shooting in April in Rome and Tuscany. " Decameron" is being directed and adapted by Britain's David Leland, whose helming credits include Band of Brothers.

Boccaccio's "Il Decameron" (c.1351) is a series of one hundred stories written in the wake of the Black Death. The stories are told in a country villa outside the city of Florence by ten young noble men and women who are seeking to escape the ravages of the plague.

Pier Paolo Pasolini directed an Italian-language version of the film in 1971. The trade adds that this new version is being designed to appeal to a younger audience and will include popular music as well as costumes from the Italian fashion designer Roberto Cavalli.

    Silent Hill Storyline Revealed
    Source: ComingSoon!
Producer Don Carmody has revealed the storyline of the upcoming movie based on Konami's psychological horror video game Silent Hill on his official website. Here is how the story is described:

A woman desperate to save her dying child finds herself trapped in an alternate reality as she searches for her daughter in a dangerous world of demons.
Rose cannot accept the knowledge that her daughter Sharon is dying of a fatal disease. Over the protests of her husband, she flees with her child, intending to take the girl to a faith healer. On the way, she ends up driving through a portal in reality, which takes her to the eerie and deserted town of Silent Hill.
Sharon disappears in Silent Hill, and Rose follows what she thinks is her daughter's silhouette all over town. It's soon clear the town is not like any place she's ever been. It's inhabited by a variety of creatures and a living darkness that descends and literally transforms everything it touches. The human inhabitants—the ones who are left—are trapped and fighting a losing battle against the Darkness.
Joined by a cop named Cybil, who has been sent to bring her and Sharon back, Rose searches for her little girl while learning the history of Silent Hill and that Sharon is just a pawn in a larger game.
To save her daughter, Sharon makes a deal with a demon in the form of a little girl, and allows the forces of darkness to take the town and destroy those who tried to destroy the demon. In the end, she saves her daughter but at a high price.

The film will be directed by Christophe Gans (Brotherhood of the Wolf) from a script by Roger Avary.

HBO Films is Developing a S.L.U.T.
    Source: ComingSoon!
HBO Films is developing Generation S.L.U.T., Marty Beckerman's dark tale of promiscuity and emotional detachment among contemporary teenagers, reports Variety. Miguel Arteta (The Good Girl) is expected to direct. Arteta is developing the script with the screenwriting team of Abdi Nazemian and Micah Schraft.

The title refers to Beckerman's acronym for Sexually Liberated Urban Teens. Beckerman details unnerving contemporary attitudes toward gun violence, sexual assault, parenting and suicide in a brutal high-school social scene.

Arteta is also attached to direct Date School, a DreamWorks comedy Red Hour is producing with Contrafilm.

Kevin Smith on The Passion of The Clerks
    Source: ComingSoon!
Writer/director Kevin Smith says on his official website that The Passion of The Clerks, the sequel to Clerks, will start shooting around April 18th.

"This is the funniest thing I've ever written. It's also really poignant," says Smith. "This isn't gonna be a cameo-heavy affair, a'la 'Strike Back.' The only returning characters are Dante and Randal, and Jay and Silent Bob." He adds that it won't be a star-studded affair and that "Jay and Silent Bob have about as much screen time as they had in 'Clerks.' This is Dante and Randal's flick all the way."

The sequel to the 1994 independent hit picks up 10 years later. It's about what happens when that lazy, 20-something malaise lasts into your 30s. It's time for the Dante and Randal to actually grow up and do something more than just sit around and dissect pop culture and talk about sex.

They'll still be making a Clerks cartoon movie separate from this feature as well.

Cheech and Chong Reunite for New Movie
    Source: ComingSoon!

Comedy duo Cheech and Chong announced at the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, Colorado that they are in the final stages of writing a script for a new movie, which they hope to start production sooner rather than later.

"We are working on a new movie now," Cheech Marin said. "We are nearly done with the script." Both said they would like to see the film out this year, maybe even during the summer if work progresses fast.

The film doesn't have a title yet, but Marin tossed out some possible titles: "The Lord of the Smoke Rings" and "The Passion of the Cheech and Chong." He promises "classic Cheech and Chong characters in their adventures."

Tom Jane Gives Punisher 2 Update
    Source: SuperheroHype!

A scooper for Ain't-It-Cool-News attended the Dallas Comic Con Convention this weekend, where Tom Jane revealed some new details on The Punisher 2.

The moderator asked Thomas Jane about there being rumors of a possible Punisher 2. Thomas' respone was....."Oh, is that still just a rumor?" We all perked up, Niles asked Jane if he could talk about this, and Thomas said "Why Not." Jane let the cat out of the bag and told the room that yesterday at a studio in north Dallas (he dropped the name, but I don't remember it), they filmed the teaser for Punisher 2. Tom O'Brien, the cover art model of Frank Castle for the Punisher comics who was also at the Con, was also at the shoot yesterday in full costume. Jane said that on his phone, he owns the only picture of himself and the "real" Punisher, both in full costume, standing next to each other. No word on when or where we will see this trailer though.

Jane said that while the script is not finished, he is working closely with the team. He said that he is doing EVERYTHING he can do to get the setting moved to the borroughs of New York and that Jigsaw is "more than likely" going to be the villian in the movie.

    "Hitch" Has Weekend Hookup
    Source: E!Online

The romantic comedy, in which Will Smith plays a matchmaker with love troubles of his own, scored way more than expected, hooking up an estimated $45.3 million, according to preliminary figures Sunday--an amount that ranks the film as the biggest Valentine's weekend opening ever.

It's the seventh time Smith has headlined a movie that has opened with at least $45 million. And, according to the tracking Website BoxOfficeMojo.com, gives Smith an opening weekend average of $34.3 million, the best of any leading man. The versatile actor has achieved the feat across all genres--action, sci-fi, drama, biopic, animation, comedy and now romance.

"He's one of those rare stars that just appeals to everyone, men, women and children. There's no doubt he's somewhat of a king of action, but he is every bit as good in comedy," Rory Bruer, head of distribution for Sony, told the Associated Press.

Sony was feeling particularly warm and fuzzy. Not only did the studio have a winner with the PG-13 Hitch, which costars Kevin James and Eva Mendes, but the studio owned the top three slots. Their PG-13 horror flick Boogeyman, last week's number one, only dropped 43 percent to second with $10.8 million, bringing its gross to $33.3 million. And Sony's PG-rated road comedy Are We There Yet? remained in third place with $8.5 million to reach a four-week tally of $61.5 million.

Sony trumpeted the accomplishment by noting that no studio had pulled off the trifecta since Universal last accomplished it in September 1989 with the unlikely trio of Sea of Love, Uncle Buck and Parenthood.

Hitch opened at 3,575 sites, where it averaged $12,671. The film didn't have any serious competition--the only other major new entry was Pooh's Heffalump Movie, another adventure for the tubby bear and his Hundred Acre Wood pals, targeted at very small kids. The G-rated Disney offering, released at 2,529 sites, averaged just $2,377 for $6 million in fifth place.

Another romantic movie, Bride and Prejudice, did manage a similar per-screen average to Hitch--$12,127--but the musical extravaganza, a Bollywood take on Jane Austen's confused lovers tale, was only released at 32 sites. That means the PG-13 Miramax release, directed by Bend It Like Beckham helmer a href="/Facts/People/0,12,45330,00.html">Gurinder Chadha and starring Bollywood beauty Aishwarya Rai and New Zealand bloke Martin Henderson, only totaled $388,076.

With the Oscars looming ever closer, Million Dollar Baby continued to rack in the bucks in fourth place, earning $7.5 million in its ninth week to reach a gross of $45 million. The Aviator, considered Baby's biggest rival for the top awards, was in ninth place with $4.6 million and has now grossed $82.2 million in nine weeks.

Fox Searchlight remained very happy with its Oscar contender, Sideways, which actually gained 2 percent in its 17th week, earning $4.7 million in eighth place at just 1,619 screens. The distributor says the film's $53 million domestic gross is now tops for an indie film that has earned a Best Picture nomination, including Lost in Translation, Gosford Park in 2002 and Four Weddings and a Funeral in 1995. Not too shabby for a feature that cost around $15 million to produce.

At big brother Fox, there was good news in that the R-rated thriller Hide and Seek is holding up. The Robert De Niro-Dakota Fanning flick only dropped 38 percent, earning $5.5 million in seventh place to bring its gross to $43.5 million.

In fact, most of the distributors seemed happy this weekend, acting as though love was in the air.

Universal rationalized that the 50 percent drop for its latest romantic comedy, The Wedding Date, was only to be expected when Hitch entered the picture, so the studio considered it okay that the pairing of Debra Messing-Dermont Mulroney fell from second to eighth with $5.6 million at 1,704 theaters, and that the the film has grossed just $19.5 million in two weeks.

The mood around Universal was undoubtedly leavened by the continued success of Meet the Fockers, which is in 10th place with $3.4 million after eight remarkable weeks. The sequel's total now stands at $269.9 million. Additionally, the studio had strong returns for its new NC-17 documentary Inside Deep Throat, which explores how the 1972 hard-core porn movie bursted into the popular culture in an era when no one would have gotten away with calling a PG-13 movie Meet the Fockers. At just 12 sites the Brian Grazer production averaged $7,583 for $91,000, and next weekend its exposure will double in size.

The top 12 movies grossed a combined $107.4 million, up 23 percent from last weekend, and 2 percent from the same weekend last year, which was also President's Day Weekend, and was led by 50 First Dates, which debuted with $39.8 million, which set the Cupid Day record broken by Hitch.

Final figures are due Monday; meantime, here are the top 10 based on initial studio estimates compiled by Exhibitor Relations:

    1. Hitch, $45.3 million
    2. Boogeyman, $10.8 million
    3. Are We There Yet?, $8.5 million
    4. Million Dollar Baby, $7.5 million
    5. Pooh's Heffalump Movie, $6 million
    6. The Wedding Date, $5.6 million
    7. Hide and Seek, $5.5 million
    8. Sideways, $4.7 million
    9. The Aviator, $4.6 million
    10. Meet the Fockers, $3.4 million

    Pirates Sequels to Feature Cannibals
    Source: ComingSoon!
The BBC reports that the "Pirates of the Caribbean" sequels plan to portray Dominica's Carib Indians as cannibals. Shooting on the films is expected to take place this April in the area, with hundreds of Dominicans applying to be extras in the movie.

Carib Chief Charles Williams said talks with Disney's producers revealed there was "a strong element of cannibalism in the script which cannot be removed".

The Caribs have long denied their ancestors practiced cannibalism. "Our ancestors stood up against early European conquerors and because they stood up...we were labelled savages and cannibals up to today," said Williams.

About 3,000 Caribs live on the island of Dominica.

Sommers Books Pass to Magic Kingdom
    Source: ComingSoon!
"The Mummy" series and Van Helsing director Stephen Sommers will direct a film based on the book series Magic Kingdom for Sale by fantasy author Terry Brooks. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal acquired the rights, and has veteran screenwriters Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel to adapt the screenplay.

The series, the first volume of which was published in the late 1980s, tells the story of a widowed attorney who leaves his old life behind when he responds to a mysterious ad and spends his fortune to purchase a magical kingdom. He and his two children get more than they bargained for when they find the kingdom on the verge of chaos.

A sixth installment of the series will be published next year. The project could end up being the first movie Sommers directs that he didn't write. Sommers is currently writing and producing a Flash Gordon remake.

Ganz and Mandel wrote the upcoming Fever Pitch and Robots. They also previously did rewrite work on National Treasure and The Notebook.
