    Default Phase 90 Sound

I am interested in getting a MXR Phase 90 and keep hearing that it recreates the tone Ed had on Van Halens debut album particularly tunes like 'Aint Talkin Bout Love' and 'Unchained'.

What I would like to know is if there are any other tunes from more recent years that Ed used this tone (or pedal) on? Anything off any of the Sammy era tunes or even the '3' album?

ATBL/Unchained were famous for his Flanger effect. The phase90 really stood out in his solos. "Ice Cream Man" solo is a good example.

I can't really think of any Hagar-era songs with the Phase 90. It's used on almost every song from Van Halen 1 and a couple other places in DLR-era Van Halen. The riff before the solo in "Mean Street" and the breakdown in "Unchained" are two examples.

I'm not sure how his flanger came into this discussion, but the Phase 90 is all-over the 1st album, and many parts of the next few. My favorite parts are the "pre-solo" in Mean Streets, and also the "pre-solo" in Light Up The Sky.

As far as recent examples....well....I can't give you any. Nor can I name anyone with normal eardrums who like his newer tones anyway......

Later with Hagar and Cherone Eddie never really used the Phase so much for the records but he'd use it live to accent certain notes or chords.

    Default Never the same

    Hi Guys,

Its obvious that Eds tone changed dramasticaly since 1978 til now.
The earlier albums used the Phase 90 extensivley.
His modern tone though is very complex...
His amp tone has changed the 5150 doesnt sound like a Marshall with a Variac thourgh it Im sure.
His effects have obviously changed with the tecno advancements since 1978.
Think about how many guitar effects came out in the 80s and 90s.
Im sure Ed has had countless products thrown at him and ones that hes experimented with.
The Phase 90 will give you that classic VH sound. To get a more Sammy era sound, youll really have to lay down some dollars and buy a nice rack unit for all the crazy gadgets.

Aftershock from Balance, but I believe it may be a flanger he is using there.

    That is a flanger, yeah.

As for Seventh Seal, I didn't go back and listen to it, but I believe that's a flanger, too.

On "The Seventh Seal" Eddie was using a flanger. In the Sammy-era Eddie hardly ever really used the Phase 90 (that I can recall), but he still occasionally kicked on the flanger. He didn't even use it much live again until the VH3 tour, which he used it often then for the old songs they brought back. After OU812 I think Eddie's favorite toy became the wah pedal.

Seventh Seal and Aftershock and a little flanger in them. Only Hagar era tune I can think of with Phase 90 is judgement day.

The MXR phase 90 is prevalent on the 1st record and use diminished from there. It does put a nice sparkle on solos. I suggest getting one of the current production orange ones for $59 and remove the R28 resistor. For sixty bucks you can;t go wrong.

Now, Unchained is an MXR Flanger. they are not made anymore but you can pick them up on Ebay.

I think you can get the reissued MXR Flanger these days for about $130. If you can get an original off of ebay they're usually gonna be 150+. I have an original one but I had a problem with the cord being so old that the outside rubber shield cracked and I needed to have it replaced. Not too big of a deal but if you paid $170 for something you really don't want to have to fix it. I've never played through a reissue so I don't know if they're different than the originals or not? If they're similar I'd just get a new reissue to avoid any wear and tear problems like I had. Not to mention, it's gonna be about $30-$40 cheaper.
