    Default Dancing in the Street

Hey can anyone tell me why the hell "Dancing in the Streets" is on BOBW? I thought Eddie always hated the fact that they even recorded that song. I don't have anything against the song personally but, it seems wierd to me.

And another thing, Has anyone heard the version of "When its Love" that Sammy does on his new live album w/ Gary Cherone? Its really good except that someone IS REALLY OFF KEY on the first couple of chorus. I mean to me its almost beyond excusable that they would let that be SO high in the mix. Any Idea who that is? I'm sure Mikey is out there and we all know it can't be him. And it aint Sammy or gary, who else sings back up for the Wabos?

Eddie was annoyed with the fact that Diver Down was half cover tunes, yes. Maybe he just liked this song.

It's Mona, the bassist. Yeah, they gave her a bit too much mic on that and on "Top of the World". She's my only sore point about an otherwise outstanding live record.

Pretty Woman peaked at #12 in 1982. When people think of this song, they only have two names attached to it: Roy Orbison and VAN HALEN.
Homer: No one snuggles with Max Power. Just strap on and feel the Gs!

American Coast Guard: Back off Canadians we got them.
Canadian Coast Guard: You back off hosers, they are in Canadian waters, eh.
American Coast Guard: Beat it you puck smacking maple suckers!
Canadian Coast Guard: Take a hike you Shatner stealing Mexico touchers!

Bart: Who the hell is this?
Jack Bauer: I’m Jack Bauer, who the hell is this?
Bart: Me, er… I’m Ahmed Adudi
Jack: Chloe, get me all you can on Ahmed Adudi… Does anyone there know Ahmed Adudi?
Chloe O’Brien: Ahmed Adudi; wealthy Saudi financier… Disappeared into Afghanistan in the late 90s…
    Jack: … Really?
Chloe (ironically): No Jack it’s a joke name, you’re being set up.
    Jack: DAMMIT!

I read in an alleged interview (which hasn't been confirmed) that Rolling Stone conducted with Eddie, he says:

RS: What about the track listing. How was that put together? How did you pick the songs?

EVH: I really didn’t have much input on that. They picked the songs we knew people would know. Obviously, as I said, they’re not ALL there, or we couldn’t fit it on two discs. As far as the format goes, well that’s real simple. We just tried to get the songs to flow, and the only way we could do that was to alternate the two eras as much as possible, with a few exceptions, you know, the live songs, and the new songs, those obviously belonged together.

It's obvious that the record company chose the track listing for the BOBW. Eddie, for the life of him, would never have put "Dancing In The Street" on the BOBW since he didn't like notion of the covers on Diver Down.
Bobby Cohn: Who's going to be at Waynestock?
Wayne Campbell: Um, uh...Aerosmith & Pearl Jam!
Garth Algar: Ha ha ha ha ho!
    Bobby: Who else?
    Garth: Uh, me...and...and Wayne...
    Wayne: ...and uh...VAN HALEN!!!
Garth: Wow. Van Halen. Who else?
    Bobby: Yeah, who else?
Wayne: Uh, an old man fashioning a kayak out of a log?

And before everyone starts bashing Dave for the amount of covers on Diver Down, Ed has said himself in many interviews that it was Van Halen bowing to WB in regards to the covers. I am sure Dave probably picked the covers to use, but it was WB's idea so that they could have hit songs. Remember that at the time each album had sold less than its predecessor, so WB wanted them to get some more radio airplay. Voila! You get Pretty Woman, Dancing in the Streets, etc. etc.

Even though I am not a big covers fan, I don't mind DD. Their versions of the covers are better than the originals in my opinion, even though Ed said he messed something up on PW (can't remember what) and Dave decided to not use a couple lines of lyrics.

But on the other hand I can just imagine Diver Down if they they redid and threw some more songs from their demos on there; like Let's Get Rockin', She's The Woman, Babe Don't Leave Me Alone, etc.

Everyone just repeat after me: box set, box set, box set.

Umm Ed has gone on record many times about the fact it all Dave and Ted`s idea and that was the final nail in the beginning of his own studio, so he wouldn`t have to do that shit again.

Diver Down was the big reason why Eddie built 5150. He didn't want Dave or Ted to push him around and make another half an album of covers. I actually really like Diver Down even with half of it being covers. I think I'm one of the only people here who actually likes DD.

I like Diver Down, I like this version of Dancing in The Streets. For Ed to hate the covers he really nails the backup vox in this song!

It's really amazing to think that Ed hates covers so much because he really blows away all of the original songs.

Just because he hated the idea didn't mean he was gonna do a shitty job. Ed's work ethic is superb in that respect.

I find it incredibly hard to believe that Edward Van Halen played on a bunch of songs he hated to do because a guy he didn't like (DLR) told him to. C'mon guys, give me a break. I believe that to be a cop out after Dave left the band. It is easy to blame all the mistakes on the guy who is no longer there.

I would like to believe that, but from 5150 through balance, 1 cover song.

Believe it, it`s well documented over the years, just not by Ed, but the rest of the band, Ed was really pissed as the riff he wrote they decided to use in Dancing In The Streets, he has always said he would rather fail with his own songs, the make with someonelses, since then 1 cover, Dave on the other hand alot of them....Hmmm

I swear I remember Ed stating that DD was a rushed album and full of covers due to the success of Pretty Woman and pressure from Warner Brothers to get an album out quickly to take advantage of the current hit. Supposedly Pretty Woman was on a soundtrack I believe. I swear I am not making this up! It might be wrong, hell Ed could have said it and it still be wrong, but I ain't making it up.

Yeah, that's pretty much the story I remember. They had released "Pretty Woman" as a summertime single, it became a hit and Warner Bros. told them they had to get in the studio and do an album.
