Default Opinion On Michael Anthony Rumors

I am a first time poster but, a long time reader of these message boards. After reading around, I am kinda suprised to read all of the these rumors and speculations on how the Van Halen brothers treat Mikey. Now I am not dumb enough to believe that Mike is a full contributer to the band anymore (Probably has not been since Balance) but IMO, I believe that this is due to the fact that when Ed and Al are up at 5150 jamming and recording its just easier to have Eddie record the bass so that the songs are done and ready to go. Mikes vocals still seem to make it on to everything they've done since Balance. And if Mike is such a "horriable bass player" and thats why Ed does play all the bass parts, then why does he record them so Michael Anthony like? Can Anyone honestly tell what songs Mike has done and what songs eddie has done? Even the stuff eddie played on Sammys solo record was pretty Mikey-like, and at that time in their relationship eddie could have done his best Bootsy Collins impression and Sammy wouldn't have given two shits. Not to mention the fact that even on this last tour Mike still got his bass solo and the chance to sing every night.

If indeed they wanted to fire him (on several different ocassions it seems) Then they would have done it. They had no problem showing a slew of other people the door so why would they stop at Mike? I personally don't believe that "Mike almost got fired on every album we made" as Sammy says in his unplublished book. To me that sounds Like Sammy being more than a little pissed that Mike stuck with the bros instead of going with Sammy. Mike seems like a very loyal person and I am sure it wasn't easy for him to choose sides, but he knows who got him where he is and wouldn't Jepordize it. And notice as pissed as ed and al were for Mike going out on tour with Sammy that they didn't fire him?

So to me It seems that while they may not be ( or ever have been) BEST Friends, the Van Halen bros have a deep respect for Mike and what he brings to the table bass and vocal-wise. And In return, we don't get his tell all book.

His backup vocals are the big reason,Its not his ground breaking bass playing at all.

I think this is another reason why they'd never get rid of Mikey....sooooo many fans would crack the shits and resent them for it..

Mikey is too nicer guy, he's the only member besides Ed and Al to have been there for the start, he has rare/killer high backing vocals...and he IS a worldclass ROCK bass player......it would make absolutley no sense to get rid of him!.

Mikes the best character on the show, no way they could get rid of this cat and still call themselves Van Halen....well I guess they still could. But no way I would call em that. Id call 'em Ed an Al go crazy and get rid of everyone in the band,

Yes! I love a good Mikey thread....

The recording process itself changed for Van Halen a long time ago. Mike can play whatever he needs to play. Ed works alone a lot. This issue was settled, I believe, a long time ago between the two.

Mikey's vocals are necesary for me, who knows to what degree they are necessary in the opinion of the Brothers.

Mike Anthony is one of the few good things left about this band, when you get right down to it. IMO.

    LOVE MIKEY!!!

I absolutely think Mike is one of the classiest guys in the industry, and I agree that it just wouldn't be Van Halen without him!

    Hey Joey,
Don't Get me wrong, I am not saying that Mike's bass playing is ground breaking. What I am saying is that Ed and Al realize that he fits very nicely in the context of what Van Halen does musically and that they would be fools to get rid of him.

But, at the same time just watch "live w/o a net" or listen to "push comes to shove", "poundcake", "so this is love", "Hang 'em high" "on fire" "romeo delight" or "I'm the one" and tell me that the guy can't play.

He can totally hold his own and I would take that level of skill on bass in my band any day. Not to mention that voice...

if they were to get rid of mike, the vh bros would have no argument as to the demise of vh, the band, being entirely their fault... not dlr, not sammy... or even gary...

What I've always wondered is, who cares about the bass playing? In the vast majority of rock records, what does the bass do besides keep the beat or basic background melody.
So unless you're Primus, how much talent does the bass player need, really?
Nobody goes to any rock concert to see or listen to the bass player specifically...unless they're a bass player, too.

And if Eddie thinks he's such a better bass player than Mike that he needs to play on the albums himself, then why is Mike able to play anything on the record just fine in concert, along with singing at the same time? (regardless of whether he or Eddie originally played it)

Mikey's voice is an integral part of the VH sound, always has been. VH would not be the same without him.
Any decent bass player could play any of the songs, but nobody could sing like Mikey.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -

I used to think the same about bass, until my band didn't have a bass player. Mike is a HUGE part of the origional sound that VH made. Ed, Al and Mike "play" (or used to) off eachother when making music. I think the records that were made when Mike was in on the recordings and jamming/making of the music sounded better. Ed is not the bass player he thinks he is. If Mike gets fired, I will throw out my VH and just forget it. Mike has to be the one consistant person in this whole thing. He's got the same wife, has never fucked anything or anyone over, and just is a big part of the show. If the VH bros want to fuck Mike over, then fuck them.

I don't know, it's pretty fun to watch Steve Harris of Iron Maiden play bass.

Oh man wasn't Sir Paul Awesome!!!

By the way Mike is without a doubt the nicest guy in the business.
This has been quoted countless times by his bass tech Kevin Dugan.

Someone that has been his tech for 25 years if not longer.

Who can talk shit about that !
