    Default Total beginner: Ice Cream Man, the acoustic part

    As a hobby I'd like to learn to play guitar a little. I figured the Dave part of "Ice Cream Man" is probably the easiest VH piece to learn initially. Well I might be wrong... Anyway I have committed to it know, so don't try to talk sense into me

    On the net I found this transcription by Glen Walters. It starts off like this:

    'Dedicate one to ...
    |----------------------|----------------------| ||
    |------O---O---O---O---|------O---O---O---O---| . ||
    |----------------------|----------------------| ||
    |----------------------|----------------------| ||
    |------------2---4-----|----5---4---2---4-----| . ||
    |----O---4-------------|----------------------| ||

    summertimes here babe need ...
    ice cream man stop me ...
    ||----------------------|----------------------|
    ||.---------------------|----------------------|
    ||----------------------|----------------------|
    ||----------------------|----------------------|
    ||.---2-2-4-2-2-2-4-2---|----7-7-9-7-7-7-9-7---|
    ||----O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O---|----5-5-5-5-5-5-5-5---|

    The first two bars sounds OK, except that the twangy open string (2) sounds a bit weird, but the second two bars just sound no way what I hear on record. On the record I can only hear 4 accords (?) during the third bar "summertimes here babe" but eight are indicated. When I play it it sounds really busy and nowhere like Dave plays it, nice and relaxed.

    Can anyone with a bit more expertise help this beginner out ?
    I am probably misreading this whole tab thing.

    Now I could be wrong, but I think DLR played in open E tuning on that one. Anyway, first two bars look right. The chugga-chugga on bars 3 & 4 look ok, but it's easier to play bar 4 on the A string and fret the D on frets 2 & 4 just like in bar 3 on the E & A. Does that make sense? In other words, for bar 4, use the A chord shape at the 2nd fret instead of at the 5th position.

    Yeah Dave played the acoustic part in open E. It was in Guitar World sometime last year. The guitar is tuned to an E Maj chord, E,B,E,G#,B,E instead of E,A,D,G,B,E. Tune to that and then try playing it.

    Ugh. A friend pointed me to the Power Tab software and I found a tab for Ice Cream Man too. Now I can play the song in MIDI and get an idea, what's going on. That's pretty much perfect and I feel a little foolish for asking here in the first place.

    Thanks for the nice and helpful responses.

    Well in case someone cares. The Tabs that float on the internet are wrong. Even the powertab ones. I recently unearthed a Ice Cream Man transcription from Guitar World June 1991 and that appears to be right on. (I used to buy that mag for the EVH content )

    I guess a word to the wise: just make sure you are in the correct tuning, especially with VH songs, Eddie tends to change tunings...some tab sites play it like Eddie did and do not point out what tuning it was recorded/tabbed in. Then there are tab sites/mags that tab it like it sounds...example: Summer Nights...Eddie plays the trans-trem...what a wonderful instrument, but damn, to stretch that far to get the same pitch is wrist wrenching .
    Guitar playing/ learning is a great thing, especially with the wide access of the internet, of course there are the tabs that are bogus etc...I trust the Cherry Lane tab books the most...I have a "library" of notation (my wife hates it)
    Just go for it!

    Diamond Dave tunes the Davesyckle to Open Eb, not Open E.

    I think it sounds cool in Open D, too.

    Also, tune the guitar three times when you tune to an open tuning to make sho' you gots it.
