Default "It's fun to shoot some people."

oh great!!! I'm sure this will be all over the evening news tonight...

WASHINGTON - The commandant of the Marine Corps said Thursday he has counseled a senior subordinate for saying publicly, "It's fun to shoot some people."

Lt. Gen. James N. Mattis, an infantry officer who has commanded Marines in both Afghanistan (news - web sites) and Iraq (news - web sites), made the comments Tuesday while speaking to a forum in San Diego about strategies for the war on terror. Mattis is the commanding general of the Marine Corps Combat Development Command in Quantico, Va.

According to an audio recording of Mattis' remarks, he said, "Actually, it's a lot of fun to fight. You know, it's a hell of a hoot. ... It's fun to shoot some people. I'll be right upfront with you, I like brawling."

He added, "You go into Afghanistan, you got guys who slap women around for five years because they didn't wear a veil," Mattis continued. "You know, guys like that ain't got no manhood left anyway. So it's a hell of a lot of fun to shoot them."

Thursday, Gen. Mike Hagee, commandant of the Marine Corps, issued a statement saying, "I have counseled him concerning his remarks and he agrees he should have chosen his words more carefully."

"While I understand that some people may take issue with the comments made by him, I also know he intended to reflect the unfortunate and harsh realities of war," Hagee said. "Lt. Gen. Mattis often speaks with a great deal of candor."

Hagee also praised Mattis, calling him "one of this country's bravest and most experienced military leaders."

He said the commitment of Marines "helps to provide us the fortitude to take the lives of those who oppress others or threaten this nation's security. This is not something we relish, yet we accept it as a reality in our profession of arms."

He said he was confident Mattis would continue to serve.

According to Mattis' biography, he commanded, as a lieutenant colonel, an assault battalion during the first war with Iraq. During the war in Afghanistan, he commanded the 1st Marine Expeditionary Brigade; in the second war in Iraq, he commanded the 1st Marine Division during the invasion and early period after the war.

He doesn't say anything about shooting women and children, just the opposite.

"He added, "You go into Afghanistan, you got guys who slap women around for five years because they didn't wear a veil," Mattis continued. "You know, guys like that ain't got no manhood left anyway. So it's a hell of a lot of fun to shoot them."

If you're going to be there, might as well enjoy it. I'd rather have guys like this on the front line than women in combat. Equal rights is okay up to a point, the point at which they start coming back in body-bags. I wish we had more guys like this guy.

I have a friend who was on the Marine batallion that pulled down the statue. That video clip you see played over and over regarding the fall of Iraq. He loved it there and signed up for another tour. To him, the worst part of the whole deal was the lack of females. War is hell, but to some people, it's better than a video game

I CAN SEE HIS POINT ...

The media has its thongs in a knot because a Marine general made some interesting comments during a panel discussion Tuesday in San Diego. Here is what Lt. Gen. James Mattis, who commanded troops during the war in Afghanistan, said that is causing quite the stir:

"Actually it's quite fun to fight them, you know. It's a hell of a hoot. It's fun to shoot some people. I'll be right up there with you. I like brawling. You go into Afghanistan, you got guys who slap women around for five years because they didn't wear a veil. You know, guys like that ain't got no manhood left anyway. So it's a hell of a lot of fun to shoot them."

Immediately the headlines blared that a Marine general said it was 'fun to shoot people.' No ... he didn't say it was fun to shoot "people." He said it was fun to shoot men who had been slapping women around for five years. Frankly, I agree with him. Thankfully the Marines and the Joint Chiefs are defending him, so it looks like his head won't roll over this one. He did issue an unnecessary apology saying he might have chosen his words better. Nonsense...his words were right on target.

Pacifist leftists who claim that 'war is not the answer' will try to use this as some sort of 'gotcha' against American troops to try and portray them as bloodthirsty killers. On the contrary, there was nothing wrong with Lieutenant General Mattis' remarks.

Hell, if given the chance to shoot and kill Osama Bin Laden, Al-Zarqawi or any of the other insurgents, you're damned right it would be a lot of fun. Might even be worth stuffing the head and mounting it on the wall.

There are a few over here in the west who could do with that treatment too.

Let's start with cyanide...The one the Aum Shinrikyo cult attempted to use to commit mass murder in a Tokyo subway in May 1995...The same cyanide produced routinely--1.4 million tons per year--for use in the production of plastics, adhesives, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and so on. It seems that those who put small amounts of cyanide in subways are terrorists. But those who produce it in mass quantities and contaminate broad reaches of soil, water, and air, killing countless living beings, are not terrorists, but rather capitalists, and are counted among the finest and most powerful people on the planet."

What's going on here perfectly illustrates the chasm in the United States presently. Some believe that violence is wrong, period. Some believe that violence is moral, if it is against immorality.

I fall in the latter camp. If a man is attempting to rape a woman and she shoves a blade through his neck, I have no problem with that violence. I see it as just, right and moral.

If a man is beating a woman because she doesn't have her face covered, and a marine pops the guy's melon, I'm for it. I cheer.

Bottom line: good can come from violence.

Well said, te. Especially since the women in the latter situation in all likelihood would never in a million years fight back.
