What Was Shown in YOUR Elementary School?

    The Cay
Author: olivern from Buffalo, New York
Back when I was in elementary school, my teachers would sometimes show the film strip of "The Cay" on days when there was little to do or they just wanted the students to unwind, like before holiday vacations or on rainy days after lunch. I used to love watching it, but unfortunately, I haven't seen it since probably second or third grade (which would be about 1987!). I agree with another commenter, that it is ashame that this film hasn't been made available on video or DVD. It is a very worthwhile film, especially for children.
I wish I could buy a copy of this on DVD,
I wonder why it's producers haven't not thought of converting this to DVD
and selling it on amazon.com for 10 to 15 bucks.

What else was shown during your elementary school days?

Did ya note the term "film strip" used by that reviewer?
I remember having a teacher hit a coffee cup with a spoon
to indicated scolling the "film strip" up or rather forward.

    Am I that old?

I don't think I even saw a real film at school until sophomore or junior year of high school. It's kind of pathetic, really. Back in the late 90s, at an advanced middle school, we were watching educational filmstrips from the 60s and 70s, and dicking around on late-80s computers. Enough of my rant, I'm sorry.

Wow, "The Cay" - I think we were asked to watch that at home - don't think it was something I would've watched on my own - but I liked it.

I'm sure there were others but the only memories I have are watching films of highlights from the 1967 World Series in 7th or 8th grade.

"School trip" - man, my kids always seem to be going on field trips. Only ones I can remember are going up to the planetarium in Portland and to the Boston Museum of Science. Of course, in Maine, there ain't jack shit to do anyway, so that might've played into it...

they showed us a twisted movie called "the lottery"
in it the whole town was in a lottery no one wanted to win.....
the "winner" was stoned to death. very odd flick.
have no idea why it was shown to us at the age.

Every year on the last day of school before Christmas, we would get together and watch a movie, which they would show in the Gym or in the music room. These are the two that stand out for me:

"Viking - last to sleep, first to rise, last to leave, that's how the Nords of old rocked the house." ~ timmac in the 'Texas Linkers' thread talking about yours truly. :-)

We never really saw any real movies in K-6th grade, but like Viking said, I think it was the last day of school or maybe even a day or 2 AFTER school was done, they opened the gym to the students to watch a movie on the huge screen, usually Disney stuff like Shaggy Dog or Apple Dumpling Gang, but my last year at that school we saw:

    And it was fuckin awesome!!!!

It seems the movies they used to show at my school had Fred MacMurray in them. Can't remember any of the names though.

Reading Rainbow, Old Yeller and some PBS show that had to do with math. Cant really remeber what it was. I remember they had two cops (Man & women) that would solve things with math and a few other things. And disney learning films on 8mm reels. They had one film that talk about the changing of the the body between boys and girls. Saw that in fifth grade. But thats all i can remeber.

In grade school the big hurrah was either Ricky Ticky Taffy, which was about a mongoose vs. a snake or The Hobbit. Both played on a projector. Old school. Word.
