    Default LTS - live 04

Not sure what show this was from, but I sure thought Sam could have done a better job on this tune on the first few lines. Seems off-key. Maybe it is just a tune that is more of a studio tune. I think its no wonder why they didn't do it more on tour. This has to be from the first show? No?

Didn't listen to the linked file... but I have a few live versions of the song. Sam struggles with the lower parts. I've said it before and I'll say it again: the lower part of Sam's range is lacking. He has a strong higher register (although it's not what it once was) but when he sings lower it can sound very weak. IMO, Ed did a respectable job of playing it live.

That kicks ass. I wish they would have played that in Boise. Any time to hear new music from the band would have been welcome.

It's sort of in the vein of Humans Being, Seventh Seal, Crossing Over and now Learning to See. I want a whole album of this heavy, well written stuff.

It's funny to hear folks criticize. I'm just glad they are playing it themselves, with out a click track.

You know the best tone I ever had was with that little bandmaster cranked to 10. Edward Van Halen, 1980, Guitar Player Magazine.

I think Sam's "higher register" is better than it was in '86. I saw them on the 5150 tour, and his voice was cracking. He was also breathin REAL hard up a mile high in Boulder. I think at 57 he's in better physical shape than when he started in VH. I don't mean the way he looks, I mean his cardio. But, you are right about the lower register. Try to sing an hour of VH and see how messed up your voice is at that point. LTS probably just can't fit on a one-size-fits-all PA system without tweakin the volume and taking out the reverb at the beginning, then changing that once the octaves go higher.

I was down with it when they played it in Buffalo. It was pretty good but Sam struggled hitting the ending. I still don't know how he hit those notes in the studio. Wham Sam. Had they played it the whole tour his voice woulda been toast.

During the Hershey soundcheck, VH played LTS. Eddie told us before they did it "This song is a real motherfucker to play live", said he has 6 guitars layered on the song, only 1 live. Maybe it was a little TOO tough to play live. I thought it sounded fine, liked how Eddie joined in the singing at the end - "I just gotta be - ME!".
